Hi all,

On a whim I picked up a small box of 210gr .311 GC 311284 cast bullets from R&R bullets to try in my No4 Enfield at the last Ancaster show. I'm having no luck finding any load data to start off with and was wondering if anyone has a load for this weigh bullet.

Up to now I have only been loading jacketed bullets in the 150-180gr range with RX-15 as per my Lyman manual so this is my first venture into cast bullets for a rifle. Can I use these bullets up or have I grabbed the wrong bullet to start out with?

Thnx
MB

P.S. I should add that I'm only punching paper with my Enfield so I'm just interested in "getting it there", not "getting it there in a hurry..."

Good choice for a .303 br, Powders you should try are IMR SR4759or Accurate 5744 would be my first choices, Start with 16 grains of either and work up from there. Try to push them around 1800 to 1900FPS.

Miltie, Miltie, the 311284 bullet is really meant for the .308" bores and my bet is that you will find it too small for your Brit....All lyman .308 bullets start with the prefix #311. Your better bet would be a prefix .314 as in the std. for the .303 the #314299 a 206 grain gc spitzer, which can be made to .314" usually. The very old Lovern #311467 will work as well. My exp. shows that most want an even bigger bullet option, such as the oversize Australian .317" 220gr. I'm experimenting with. My point is, try the 311284, but if it doesn't work out due to size, don't give up on some of these other excellent bullets that put loading and accurate shooting with the .303 in a whole new light. Lyman changed their numbering(311vs314) many years ago, and the Lovern would be numbered 314467 if avail. today.

I normally sized mine to .313 when I loaded for my No1 Mk3
Depending on what your bore size is .311 may shoot just fine, my P-14 shoots .311 well, give them a try and see if they'll shoot.

My 311291 mold drops out at .314 so I can use them in any 30 cal rifle I own.

I use the same mold. It drops them out at .314 using hard lead. I do not size them just seat a gc.and lube them with lyman orange magic. 25.5 gr. of IMR 4198 works well for me.

I have had a Lyman 311284 mold for more than 30 years. It drops straight WW bullets at .313" That weigh 211-212 grains. Have loaded it in everything from 30-30, sized and with the nose filed flat, to 303 Br unsized.

The best groups I ever got with the 303 Br was using 40 gr of H4831 and magnum primers. Can't remember why I even tried that powder, but it sure works! :D

Give it a try, and let us know how you make out with this load.

I have used the same bullet. 10 to 15 grains of Unique works well. I also got very good results with 4198 and 3031.

if you got 4895 or RL15, try about 25 grains and work up, looking for accuracy.

In the 3rd edition of The Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, they do list the #311284, 210gr GC cast bullet and loads for use in the 303Br cartridge. I guess it could also be used in most of the 30 cal, 0.308" but a quick check of their 3rd edition, the only 30 cal's I see loads listed for is the 303Br and the '06. Matching the sized daimeter to the bore of your rifle will enhance the accuracy results, even with plinking loads.

The velocitites listes in the 3rd edition are from a low of 1130 f/sec to a maximum of 1450 f/sec. If you're stuck, PM me your e mail address and I'll send you a scan of the info. I'm working on similar loads for my Jungle Carbine but using a 185grGC and a 225grGC.

Just a post note here on #311284, from my molds it drops at .311" with hard lead and .310" with softer mixtures, and yes, if it's big enough for your bore, it's a great bullet.
