I just got a brand new 7 x 57 Mauser Ruger #1 RSI . I am looking for some suggestions for the best possible hunting load.

I plan on using it for shooting large bodied deer at 50 to 150 yds and maybe a moose or two. I would like to take advantage of the best bullet technology I can and develop something that really slams them.

I've never owned this caliber before but from what I have read I suspect a 140 grain Nosler partition might be a good choice.

I've loaded shells for years but never really experimented much so if you would'nt mind. What would you use and why ????

I love the #1 Ruger's. I bought a #1 International a few months ago. I bought 100 rounds of Prvi Partizan 175 gr. from one of your sponsors, SFRC After I shoot that off, I plan to use Nosler 160 gr. Accubond Spitzer. I think that would be better than the 140 gr. for hunting. If I was planning to hunt with mine I would stick with the 175 gr. especially for moose. I just bought mine because it was just so dam prudy ;) PS. You asked why. Personally I like heavy bullets for hunting. Better penetration, especially in bear county. OMG I hope I don't start a new Bear defence discussion.

My 7x57 loves to shoot 140gr Barnes TSX bullets. FS

139 gr. Hornady BTSP's @ 2600fps
or 154gr. Hornay SP's @ 2350fps.

Both chronied out of my #1 RSI, and both loaded with Winchester brass, and H4350 powder.

139gr. set for 3" high at 100yds, while the 154's are pretty much spot on @ 100yds.

That's the long and the short of it.

You have to work up the load for your rifle. No two will shoot the same ammo the same way. You don't need premium bullets for any game in North America.

You have a rifle with a long throat. you want to shoot moose. Any deer you shoot will be at close range, 150 yards and under. That combination is made to order for the tried and true, traditional 7x57 hunting load, a 175 gain roundnose at 2400 fps. At that speed the old cup and core designs kill AND penetrate very well. They kill just like light, fast 140 gr. "premium" spitzers on deer, but penetrate far better for moose.
And cost less. And you'll be doing the right thing for your rifle!;)
