does anyone have a starting load for .308 win , 165 grain bullet , using IMR 4198 powder ?I 've looked in my reloading manuals , no info there ......please starting load thanks Joe

My Lee manual only lists 4198 for the 110gr bullet, and its a ####ty load even for that one.

Get some Varget, IMR 4895, or RL15, they work awesome with the 165gr.;)

I have data for a 169gr bullet for .308 using IMR 4198 but it's for a cast bullet. I don't know if it would help you or not as I'm not sure if you can use cast data for a jacketed bullet. I also have data using the same powder with a 180gr jacketed bullet. If one of these is of any interest to you, send me a pm.

Glenliz is right on and 4198 makes a great .308 powder for reduced loads or cast bullet loads although i prefer 4759 for that purpose. 24 grs of IMR 4198 and a 165gr. bullet gets 1850 fps and 24k press. and 30 grs.of 4198 gets 2300fps. and 48K pressure, this is data from my old notes, and as usual was press. tested by A.Arms

Imr 4198 in .308

From the IMR/Dupont powder booklet.. IMR4198 in .308 Winchester.

Useing 110 Hornady...Max load of IMR4198....38.5 grains...3015 fps..51,100 CUPS pressure.

Useing Rem. 150 PTD spt....Max. 35.5 grains...2595 fps...51,300 CUPS

Useing Rem 180 gr PTD spt...Max...33.5 grains..2350 fps...51,600 CUPS

Start loads are not indicated...but as stated and from my experience IMR4198 is good for reduced loads in ANY caliber ..so you can start at any powder weight under max that you want to and work up.

There are many more efficient powders to achieve higher velocities but if that's what you have ..you will get accuracy with IMR4198 too.

H4895 works best for me with any 165 grainer. Plus - it launches my .243 58 gr gopher vaporizers @ over 4000 fps, works for the 6.5, and pounds out my 350 RN's out of the old .45-70!

"...From the IMR/Dupont powder booklet..." Geezuz, that's older than the 1977 edition of Hodgdon's manual I have.
IMR4198 is not recommended for the .308. Use IMR4064.
