Loading 6.5x55 to higher pressures in modern rifles?

This is from Lapua R&D:

You mean Mauser 1896 and 1898; ie. 1898 is classic Mauser 98 and 1896
is Swedish Mauser. If so, Mauser 98 is stronger action than Swedish
Mauser. Although Swedish rifles are very well and beautifully made,
action itself is not very strong. I have seen the Swedish Mauser
actions used here and in Sweden for the .308 and .30-06 rifles, but
that is not recommended. The Mauser 98 actions can be used for rifles
up to .458 Win Mag, but then one must be sure about action origin and
condition.

Kimber used to make sporters on the 96 action but had several blowups .Not sure which calibers but was made in .308,.243 +22-250 etc Harold

I've had a lot of fun loading for a 6.5X55 that's based on a M98 action.

With 140's I was never able to exceed 2950 fps in the 26" barrel at pressures I considered sane.

Highest MV's were full cases of IMR7828 and Re25. In my gun, best accuracy was with H4350 at about 2750 fps, a close second was with H1000 at about 2850 fps.

I even tried Retumbo and US869 which both worked quite well accuracy-wise, but even with compressed loads, were too slow a powder to hit the MV's we typically see: 2650 for 53.5 grs of Retumbo and 2750 fps with 59.0 grs of US869.

Edit - the new Re23 might be a good fit for the 6.5X55 and 140's.

There was a thread, about a year ago that also discussed hotter loads for the 6.5X55..it was a good discussion and covered a lot of ground on the subject. I am going to bed both my 6.5X55 and start over again. I think the hottest I went was 44gr of IMR 4350 and 140 Partitions, CCI200 primer and Norma brass, 2700fps. Going to try some hotter loads this year in my Voere.

Keep us posted.
