loading a steven's 223

I bought one of those steven's 200 in the .223 caliber, the type with the top feed internal magazine....It shoots great, I can get under 1" groups at 100yds from a bench but I have a problem loading it properly. Is there a trick to placing the bullets in? Some times when I fire the first round and eject it, the bolt does not grab the second one, it slides right over the top. It has happended on more than one occasion, I worry one day I will need the extra shot (on a coyote) and it won't be there. I am new to reloading and thought about loading some dummy rounds so I can practice loading and ejecting the rounds to make sure I get it down pack.... Any thoughts.... thanks..

Well, it's s Savage.....

Try to make sure the cartridges are inserted and pressed all the way to the back of the magazine.

You have to move the bolt all the way back until it hits the metal. Been there done that.
