loading for the 22-250

well last night I prepped 50 cases, new brass, winchester, sized and trimmed now. After that I primed them with CCI primers.

Prepared one as a test for max OAL in my Savage Stevens 200, 22-250

well with the 50grn Nosler BT I was some surprised by the lenght of the freebore, shell measured up at 2.505" thats a lot longer then SAMMI spec.

But the magazine will handle that lenght no problem, I'm going to load that round at 2.485" giving me 0.020" clearance

Next, powder, I decided to start with H-380 and why not 38.0grn with a 50grn bullet in the 22-250 gave the powder its name. So thats where I'll start.

Tonight I start loading and then testing.

I have the same rifle as you.

I found the same thing in regards to overall length as you. I'm seating mine at 2.485 with hornady 50 gr Vmax.

The problem with the stock barrel is that it's a fairly slow twist (1 in 12''). Mine doesn't like anything over 50 grs and only shoots well with 40gr bullets.

I've shot quite a few loads with H380, varget, and IMR4895. With bullets ranging from 40gr to 60 gr Sierra, barnes, nosler, and hornady bullets So far 4895 has been the most consistent, at 35.1 grs with a 50 gr. Vmax and WLR.

My best load so far is 36.3 grs of 4895 with a 40gr sierra varminter hp and WLR.

Another intersting load is 12.5grs of alliant bluedot with a 40gr sierra varmint and a WLMR primer. It averages .5MOA at 100yards, is very low recoil, and not too noisy at all. It's a load I borrowed from a friend and played around with. He was shooting with 14grs of bluedot but mine likes it further reduced. Magnum primers are used to get a consistant burn as the bluedot does not take up much room in the case. I did try regular WLR primers and found it was much less consistant. I'm not sure of the velocity as I don't have a chrony but it sits an inch and a half lower in POI than the full power 40gr loads.

I'm still tinkering with mine. Actually part of the reason I bought it was to play around with at the range just to see how accurate it can be. Varminting has become a side project as I don't get out to the gopher patches near as much as the range.

"...why not 38.0grn with a 50grn bullet..." Oddly enough 38.0 is the starting load given by Hodgdon for that bullet weight. Max is 41.0.
