hey just wondering if anyone loads for the 45-70 i just bought the marlin 1895lever action and i was just wondering what the heaviest bullet i can load for is because from what ive been reading in the lymans reloading book says 405 gr but in the lee loading manual it lists up to 500 gr so im a little confused i also realise max overal length must be 2.550" any help would be apreciated thanx

In the Marlin all bullets must be crimped in place. The crimping groove on the 500 grain jacketed bullets designed for the various 458 magnums is usually in the wrong place to get the correct OAL for the Marlins.

On a practical note a full-house 400 or 405 grain load shot through your Marlin at around 2000 fps will produce all the recoil most people wish to soak up.

There are alot of heavy bullets meant for the 45/70 but single shot rifles only...many of the over 500 gr. bullets have long ogives and no crimp groove..those are the ones mean't for BPCR in single shots. The Marlin can use any bullet that has a crimp groove where it will not result in too long a round. I have used the M.T. Chamber's 480gr. wide flat nose gas check in the Marlin with good success, again the crimp groove is in the right place. They make many dif. heavy bullets for the Marlin as well as bpcr. The only negative to these heavy bullets is a step up in recoil when you go to 450-480gr. bullets.

I was going to try Trilboss in my GG but with only 8 or 9 grains I can't see much of a kick in recoil with a 500gr cast.:D DAN>>>
I think its only doing 900 Fps.
