Howdy CGN,

I have a new to me Ruger Scout rifle that I've fallen hard for. It is a really nice rifle!

Looking to see if anybody has tips on good loadings to start with, good powders to try, etc. I haven't really loaded 308 Winchester that much or for shorter barrel lengths.

Looking to work up a good hunting load with something like an Accubond or a Barnes TTSX in 165 - 180 grains. Something for plinking at the range would be good too!

Thanks!

Hi,
Hornady 180gr BTSP Interlock, FC brass, Fed LR primer, 43gr IMR 4064, fps 2600
Just over 1" at 100m

200gr RNGC cast(Jet Bullet), PMC brass, Fed LR primer, 33gr IMR 4064, fps 1780
about 2" at 100m(shot well out to 200m)but about 20" low.

115gr RNGC cast, PMC brass, Fed LR primer, 10gr Trailboss, fps ? (supersonic though)
Under an inch at 50m (did not try groups at 100m) no recoil and fun to shoot steel at 100m.

All loads worked well in my 16" GSR and showed no signs of over pressure.
Take care.

The old standard for plinking is a bulk 150gr FMJ with H4895 or IMR4895.
My .308 rifles like 43gr in thick military brass. You can probably bump it up a grain or 2 in commercial brass. Gets about M80 ball velocities in the 2750fps range.
If you want to get really cheap get some bulk Dominion 4895 from canadaammo and some 123gr .310 pulldowns.

I would go with with Barnes 150 and reloaded 15 as the velocity will be higher to expand the bullet as the 168g velocity will be slower. If using a lead bullet could try 168g as velocity should be higher than the Barnes 168

Minimum speed for full expansion, from Barnes

so far my scout has not shot any 180 grn loads well. neither factory or hand loads. all over a inch to 1.75 inches. seems to prefer 150 and lighter. shot some 125 noz bt that were awesome. my tikka batue is much the same with 150 swift siroccos shooting well under an inch.
