loading spring problem Winchester 1894 pre64

I have troubles screwing back the loading spring for my Winchester 1894 pre 64, it appears the screw is too short but I purchased another set of spring plus screw and they were identical and still can't screw the spring back in.

if you have any suggestions, it would be appreciated.

Just a possibility...is the broken tail from the last loading gate still stuck in the recess? I had this happen and it wasn't until I did some digging around that I found it and got it out, then was able to screw the new one in.

I checked and no obstruction, the holes of the spring and the action actually aligned perfectly, it's just that the screw cannot reach the spring hole. originally I thought the the screw that came with gun was too short, so I ordered another set of the spring and screw, but the new screw is exactly the same size as the one that came with the gun.

You need to force the spring flat against the action before starting the screw. It's under tension before the screw will start.

Guntech has it. Last couple I changed I had to push it over with a screwdriver so it would reach the screw.

yes, I made sure the spring is in perfect position, the holes aligned

I put my index finger pushing the spring hole against the action hole, the screw just won't catch

Guntech has it. Last couple I changed I had to push it over with a screwdriver so it would reach the screw.

I have other pre64s, and never had problems until this one,

as has been said you are not pushing the spring home so the screw can grab pusg up on it harder

Some springs have more tension than others... a manufacturing varience. You can attempt to bend the spring so it is easier to install but I suggest you simply get it in the correct position and install the screw.

Put the rifle in a vise. The one that gave me trouble I stuck a punch through the side to line stuff up. Put a screw driver against the spring and push or lever it in place. Keep tension on it. Pull the punch out and put your screw in. Should go together.

i think that's is in fact the problem, but i just don't seem to be able to push it enough
