Will soon have a Magnum Research BFR in 45-70 in my greedy little paws:cool:
This is the 7.5 in. version. Apparently the biggest drawback using factory ammo and most handloads is a lot of unburnt powder, even find this with my 18.5 in. Guide Gun. I plan to start out with Trail Boss loads, has a fast burn rate and low recoil:dancingbanana:Does anyone have experience loading more powerful loads that would suit this short barrelled hand cannon? I cast my own bullets, from Lee 340 gr.'s to 560 gr. WFNGC T-Rex killers. I was looking at 460 S&W data and wondered if the powders and loads suitable for that huge case might not be a place to start. The BFR is available in 460 S&W so pressures in the larger 45-70 case shouldn't be a concern. I've been handloading for 20+ years so I know the risks of messing in uncharted waters, just wondering if someone has got their feet wet before me:D
Thanks,
Sharpset

Try "realguns.com" - he has his worked up reload data for .45-70 jacketed and cast rifle, plus loads for a T/C Contender in .45-70. Great site anyway, lots of interesting articles Joe has written. Good sense of humor and an accomplished handloader.

I tried TrailBoss in BFR, 350 gr Hornady RN, the load was too light with just over 12.5 (? not sure) grains of powder (later checked with chrony, 1000 fps from 22 inch Marlin bbl), but fun to shoot. If you're looking for velocity TB is not the best choice.

Factory loads in 250 - 300 gr range were pretty accurate at 70 m. I never chronographed these from the BFR, but from the rifle bbl it was 1250-1400 fps IIRC.
