A buddy asked me to reload for him and he wants to challange hiself to shots over 500 meters.

Any recommended loads for .308 to do that?
Thanks!!

I assume we're talking about shooting targets only? Is he working up to being able to shoot that far on game?

I would start with the A-max or MK for targets, or the SST or BT for long-range hunting.

If he has not shot that rifle at that range, tell him to put up a sheet of plywood for a first target....and put the bull about 2 feet from the top. I would not necessarily blame the load if he could not group at that range.. But it is fun trying.

Wow! What an open ended question, as we have no idea if he is a good shot, using a hunting rifle or target rifle, etc, etc.
All .308 winchester loads with 150 to 168 grain bullets are fully capable of shooting out to 500 yards or more, accurately. It will depend on the bullets and his gun, and his capability.
If he wants to be serious about it, such as DCRA style long range shooting, then you will find that the majority are using 155 grain match bullets.
If he wants to play at it, then any load and bullet that is accurate in his rifle will do.

I used a Nosler Accubond 180 grn, MAX load of IMR 4064 in Federal cases, with fed 210gm primer seated 0.015" off the lands in a 308 CZ550. Chronied @ 2665FPS and shot well under MOA if the scope mounts stayed tight, those stupid CZ rings suck.

Check the Nosler manual for start and max loads, start low, work up. Bear in mind that this is a compressed load.

From a zero @ 100yds, come up 7.5" to zero 300yds. and from there get a ballistic chart from biggameinfo.com. BC on the 180 Accubond is .507.

JT.

He is using a rem 700 with Bull Barrel. He wants to use 168 Amax. I have had good luck with RL15 for my hunting loads, but I have never loaded a match round.
