I have heard that for semi auto's, you should use a faster burning powder..Is this true??.. Anybody have any load data for semis... Its for a remington 742 BTW...

Thanks,

Vince

The caution with a semi is that you don't want to use light mag rounds, it will cycle to fast and jam. Hot Handloads are the same. Use small base dies if handloading. The powder used don't matter at all(for that caliber), just don't go crazy on the hot side.

For deer, I used 47.2 grains of IMR4320 behind a 180 grain Ballistic Tip. This load gave me bang/flop performance on whitetails at short to medium range (under 100 yds). I got about 2470 fps in my 742.

I've been having a great bit of success with 60 grs of H4831 and a hornady 165 spfb #3040. This gets just shy of the 2700fps,excellent ejection, and the recoil is so tame you dont loose the target. Their lee factory crimped..Having said that I shoot em out of an FN bar, so your results may vary...I reloaded once for a fella that had one of those short a$$ rem carbines. It's absolute min was 180. 165's are fine for anything in north america short of DG
