I'd like to start a conversation with anybody that's interested in handloading for the Winchester (Miroku) 1885 Low Wall in .243 win.

1. I'd like a head start on figuring out a good set of loads. While each gun may end up with its own particular best load I'd like a good starting point. And while the loading books have those in abundance I'm thinking that hearing from others with the same rifle may speed up the process.

2. I'd also just like to hear more from people with this rifle. About anything really likes-dislikes field experience. Choosing a good 'scope.

I bought it as a mountain rifle due to its low weight, short length and long barrel. This is partly due to the advice of Chuck Hawks, who incidently offers the following load advice:
My favorite general purpose .243 load uses a Hornady 87 grain BTHP bullet in front of a maximum load of 37.1 grains of IMR 4064 powder for a MV of 3100 fps. Hornady technicians developed this load in Hornady cases using Federal 210 primers. It provides very good accuracy in my Browning 1885 Low Wall rifle.

I'd be interested in loads for varmints, deer and sheep. At first glance I've been thinking of using Barnes 80 grn. tipped triple shock and I also have some non-tipped triple shock. The varmint load I was thinking of starting with is the 55grn. Nosler Ballistic tip.

Cheers,

Cody
