Going to start reloading for the first time in the next few weeks wondering what is the best load you have come up with for your .308 5r so I don't buy all crap components, and have a starting point.

Alot of people get the same good working settup with the 5R. You guys should try 45gn of varget when using the 175smk. It's the high node. Will push u around 2700fps.
42.5 was the low node in my gun as well. Very accurate but was a slow round at only 2500fps.

175smk
Win brass trimmed 2.005
CCI Br2 primer
44.9gn varget
.015 off the lands.
( 2.330 ogive oal )

Its all in the picture. Single Round Feed Only.Neck Size Only about .020 of the top of the neck, 42.5 grs of Varget, 210 primers, 168 Amax, OAL is 2.885 and Hornady Match Brass. This is very long so do a dummy load to make sure it cycles. If you want mag length than seat at 2.810 at 44 grains with all the same info from the pictures.

It all depends on your throat.

42.5gn of varget with the bullet loaded at 2.820" fits the mag and works very well for lots of us.

I also shoot the 175smk .15 off the lands with a 44.9gn charge.

both are deadly accurate. However a eccentricity guage is very nice to have when your rounds are loaded that long.

So when you say off the lands that means the distance to the first contact of rifling? So for me to make them .15 off the lands i need
To know the chamber length correct? I'm very knew to this, as in today new lol. How long is the chamber in the 5r?

.15 off the lands means that. The OAL would go all the way to the rifle lands then back .15"

Basically the maximum OAL you can have where the bullet ogive touches the rifling in the chamber, then you seat the bullet .15" deeper so the distance from ogive to rifling is .15"

Your rounds OAL when it is .15" off the lands depends on your chamber and the design of the bullet. I.E, the OAL of .15" off the lands would be very different between a Berger VLD bullet and an SMK as the ogive to tip shape is different.

By ogive I mean where the bullet diameter becomes the proper calibre width.

lol clear as mud?

lol how about we use Ogive

get a comparator, use it to measure the Ogive. put the Ogive just off the lands.

You will half to test to get the best results. good method is to touch, than go back .040 untill your at 2.800 using 5rd groups of ammo. Take the group with the best results and tweak in there.

The best way hands down is a tool called the hornady OAL guage. Cost about $45 with a modified case.

You can also just load a bullet long and keep shorting it by .010 until it fits. It's a bit easer if you take the firing pin out of the bolt.

The biggest thing tho is get that comparritor. Kinda false info measuring off the tip.

ghetto way number 2

take the bullet your going to use and drop it into the chamber, with a peice of dowling give it a light tap into the bore,

take the peive of dowling and run it down your barrle from the muzzle untill it touches the tip of the bullet, with a pencil mark where the dowling exlise the barrel,

tap the bullet back out,

reintall the bolt and closee it, run the dowl back down the bareel and into the bolt face, mark where it exits the barrel again

take your calipers and messure the 2 lines (the thinner you make the lines the more accurate this will be)

this is now the max COAL, on the calpers make the messurement ,015" smaller (or how ever far you want to be off the lands) now useing THE SAME bullet, set up your dies so the OAL matches what you have with the calipers...

total cost = about a buck for the dowling from your hard wear store

Well just got back from the range and shot my best group to date. With my first set of handloads. 5 shot group the one flyer was my fault last shot i rushed it.

Most of the groups were .75-1" but I'm no great shot i was just shooting off of a back pack that was kinda awkward and i've only shot a target rifle maybe 100 rounds today included. But this is quite motivating for me. Can't wait to get my bipod from mystic and a get a rear sand bag. And learn to breath better, and actually shoot good.
