Hi

I'm trying to locate a 12 gauge, jc higgins pow-r-choke tube for short range only.

These were used on the jc higgins model 20 pump action shotgun.

Has anyone seen an unwanted one lately?

thanks
Larry

Numrich sells the one you are looking for but be careful using them they were originally made by lyman and not made for plastic wads
Per lyman some years ago

Lyman returned my email, it says;

"They were designed when fiber and cardboard wads were the norm in shotshell loadings" not designed for plastic wads.

Would these be the same thread as the Lyman external tubes?

Being the old fool that I am messing with these contraptions is a hoot. Nothing but nothing will pattern shotshells like these old Lymans . I shot some 12 gauge 3/4 0z # 8 loads out of a extra full tube that still have me smiling and scratching my head. Sorry for the highjack LarryG . As 3Macs1 stated Numrich should have what you looking for.

A lot of Lyman talk here but IIRC the OP's tubes and muzzle devices were made for Sears (J.C. Higgins) by Pachmayr Gun Works (or copied from). Pachmayr's patent was known as the POWer PAC. Using the Pachmayr name in a search may turn something up. I could be wrong, I often am.

Yep it is out there for sure :) Darryl

POWer-PAC chokes were the creation of E. Baden Powell and Frank Pachmayr and originally produced by the Pachmayr Gun Works in Los Angeles.

Sears licensed the design from Pachmayr for production by High Standard on the various shotgun designs that High Standard produce exclusively for Sears.

Tubes were originally ordered through sears here where I lived. How do I remember that mom worked at sears for 40 years :) and got me tubes once

Some where along the line Lyman got hooked up with Pachmayr and was a dealer and it was Lyman that answered my e-mail when I asked that Power pac question some years ago. If you look at the lyman site they still sell some Pachmayr products
From the original ads I think they would have let anyone sell them
Cheers

I wish the old companies like Poly Choke, Lyman's great choke tubes and Cutts products, Cobra and others were still around. I doubt I could buy enough to keep them in business though.

I hear you my friend. New is not always better
I have a model 12 skeet 12ga here with a cutts. I love the way that thing patterns and barks :) But no one else appreciates it today around you when it is shot :(
Take care

So, I took out the vernier caliper and measured the two tubes I have, they came in as .713 long range, and .736 medium range, which implies they have both been reamed to cylinder and Light Modified or Improved Cylinder. So scratch that OP, the one I seem to need is the long range one, or maybe just another set.

Regarding the plastic wad problem, I saw a guy on youtube who loves the old higginses and he just cleans out the plastic wadding once in a while from the brake, they create no other issues. So, I'll give it a try and see if I get the same result.

Thanks to all who replied by the way, lots of good information.

They most likely were not reamed. The way a Cutts or POWer Pac works is like a jug choke. The shot charge opens slightly when leaving the bore and is squeezed back down when it hits the choke tube. The measurements of conventional choke does not align with Cutts tubes or POWer Pac tubes. See if you can find measurements for original tubes and compare.

UPDATE: research reveals that the full tube should measure .680 to .690 so I am wrong. BUT putting some shot on paper may reveal different pattern percentages compared to choke measurement due to the "jug choke" effect.

Another slight-thread-highjack...
- Would a Cutts body in aluminum be strong enough for 12g ?

Can't see why not I use a aluminum spreader tube on a 12 gauge steel cage and a aluminum body and a steel tube on a 16 gauge 870 haven't shot off either in a lot of years of banging.
