Hi folks,

I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. I have been looking around this site for information on where one can practice long range shooting in southern Ontario. I live in the GTA. I'd like to start hunting deer maybe next year, but first I want to make sure that I can hit reliably to a few hundred yards before I even try 100. Actually, if I have the aptitude, I'd love to buy a .308 or 30-06 and start reaching for it limits and then get into longer distances and bigger cartridges, but I don't know if this is a realistic goal since I have no idea where I can shoot. People have mentioned CFB Borden, but I have no military history and few connections - do they allow civilians to practice there?

Are there any commercial ranges where we can practice out to 200m or further? I would gladly join and pay for long range shooting instruction.

Are there friendly farmers who would accept beer/wine/money in exchange for allowing some shooting? I imagine that knowing people (and being known as a trustworthy individual) would help a lot there.

Also, what are the legalities of shooting on crown land, whether it's on or off hunting season? Those of you who can make shots beyond 300m or 500m for game, where do you go to practice or sight-in your guns? Can you practice up-hill and down-hill, or just flat elevation?

Thanks very much!

F Class is a precision shooting discipline designed for guys like you. Have guns, want to shoot, don't know much about the clubs and associations. Search the Ontario Rifle Association. There are authorized ranges on several military bases around the province, and the ORA has range days on the calendars.
