Locking a shotgun outside the safe.

Hi guys:

I don't have much faith in trigger locks. It seems to me that a loaded firearm could be made to fire if trigger locked.

Here's how I had it locked prior to this idea. Removing the barrel every time got to be a PITA.


I tried to get one of these but no luck.


So I decided to make a breech lock from some 13Ga steel.
Here are the parts, cleaned up inner tube will line the part that contacts the gun.


And here is how I lock it up now. Way better.

You did some nice work on the locking block, but it seems a little complicated for something that has the same function as a standard cable lock that can fit down through the action.

cable lock would have been simpler and easier, not to mention cheaper than the Kuger lock you bought for this project.

Seems useless to me ... loaded and ready to rock and roll is not going to get one into less trouble than a loaded and trigger locked gun in the first place.
Then didnt get much sleep last night due to my hacking cough and having been drinking the same stuff that haha49 likes to dink before coming to CGN.

Seems useless to me ... loaded and ready to rock and roll is not going to get you in less trouble than a loaded and trigger locked gun in the first place.

i think he is refering to how easy it would be to toss a shell in, close the chamber and pull on the trigger lock. Its my understanding that the lock remington gave me with my 870 prevents that as you cant depress the slide lock. i use a regular combo trigger lock on all my guns, may not look pretty but they work.

I wouldn't.
I feel I have a duty to be certain that a stored firearm can not fire and a trigger lock falls short of that.

Definitely nice handywork but personally I'd be more concerned about the legal ramifications of using something I made vs something produced commercially that is intended for use as a trigger lock.

I have cable locks on several guns. The elevator is in the way on this shotgun, and although I thought about drilling a hole in it, you guys woulda called me Bubba.

On my shotgun the elevator has kind of a notched V shape in the front, so with it elevated with the action open and the notch you can put a cable lock through. I assumed most had some similar features.

Another option would be some narrow aircraft cable with loops on the end, would be smaller to get down past the elevator.

Looks like you could screw your contraption to a wall and use it as a locking rack.

Why?
Plastic zap straps yes the trade name or the generic ones too for that matter are perfectly legal methods of securing the firearm.

Trigger locks by no means 100 per cent if not installed correctly or the slightest bit loose. There was a case about a decade ago of a young man in Ontario who was shot and killed with a rifle that had a trigger lock on it. Try it yourself with an UNLOADED gun.

I like your set up. Looks good.

I use this method. It seems to work but have never had to use it in an "emergency", I hope I never do.
