Locking Necro Threads Question

There is no evidence an old thread is still legitimate until someone wants to resume it, and if it's locked it can't be resumed so they must be right

They just want a reason to tear people apart
“ITS BEEN DISCUSSED BEFORE”
“Use the search function”
Etc etc.

But for the love of god DO NOT BUMP A THREAD.

Sounds pretty dumb doesn’t it.
I don’t get it. But everyone here seems so hot and horny to jump on people for using a forum for its intended purpose 🤷‍♂️

Why are old threads now being locked when they are opened up again? What's wrong with further discussion?

I agree.
Just because a topic isn't front and center right this instant does not mean it still isn't relevant.

This might begin to apply even more now, as more and more of the current "fad" firearms end up on a prohib list, people might start exploring the older designs again, and with that comes questions.... Why not bump up a thread from 10yrs ago instead of starting another one? At least it shows that a person tried the search function, which guys get dogpiled on for not doing....

Well, to coin a phrase... Because they can.
Sometimes old threads need to die, but then again sometimes there is more relevant information learned and needs to be passed on.

I like the idea of locking old threads. If you wanna restart a discussion from 10 years ago, link the locked thread in a new thread.

I keep seeing posts from 10 years ago about XYZ Gun coming to market, get excited only to open the thread and realize it's old - when I'm on desktop I can see dates before clicking, but not on my phone.

I think that the only thread that should be locked is one which was created in contravention of existing forum rules. Other than that, I don't think that it serves the community to lock legitimate threads. Often thread are locked just because someone said something that triggered someone else; rather than assign blame, and assess penalties, a moderator will just lock the thread. If this poster or that poster is arguing or posting inappropriately, discipline them - sure - but please don't lock a thread just because two misbehavers acted out.

That's different from what the OP is talking about. He's talking about necro bumped threads that are getting locked simply for being old. (See the link in his first post for an example)

At that point we get the other side of the coin.
“Why link a thread and start a new one when you can just continue it in an existing thread”

Members here are ruthless about starting new threads that have been discussed.
And then they are just as ruthless if you reply in a thread that you wanted to start a thread about. 🤷‍♂️

If I'm on desktop and I see it's a 10 year old thread, I assume it's been necro bumped and the people who started the discussion have long since moved on from the topic. This greatly diminishes my liklihood of even opening the thread.

I think starting a new thread means you don't have the above issue where people ignore it due to its age, thus making for a better discussion, and by linking an old thread you show you've put in some effort before starting the thread.

YMMV of course, at the end of the day it's really nothing more than personal preference.

One say “it is a 10years old thread lol..”
then an other one say “ use the search button, it’s been discussed over and over again…” that doesn’t make any sense, if you use the search button and get onto something that is relevant to you, you should be able to comment/ask questions on that thread imo!

But when you are necroing a thread and not adding anything useful. Then infractions should be handed out. I've seen alot of newbies necro old thread and post nothing. Just for them to get EE access and not really want to contribute. It gotten worse in the 2.0...

The rash of necro threads since the change to the new layout is the fault of the new search feature. When doing a search now, it defaults to random results, not chronological. That results in newer members doing a search, first results look good, and so they post in a 10 year old thread. Changing the search results to be organized by date would get rid of most of these old thread posts.

That's one issue I see - most necro bumps are not really adding to the discussion, and most times even if it's relevant it's probably already been said. For example, the thread linked in the OP was bumped by this:

I'm gonna rebarrel one of my many 788s in 22 Creedmoor.
Why? cause I can...

To me that isn't adding anything useful to the discussion of "what's your experience with 788s".

That's a damn good point. Search defaulting to a "by date" order, newest first would really help.

Yup, that is what the narcissists do. They have that narcissistic view that once THEY have duscusssed or read something, that nobody else matters any more and that subject should be banned from further discussion. Pretty pathetic really but those types are on every forum I have been on. Personally, I think that reviving a thread is a huge benefit for many users because if someone revived an old thread, it is because they have more to add OR have more relevant questions that were not addressed in the previous thread. By resurrecting that old thread, as opposed to starting a new one, means that every one that sees the resurrected thread can read the original thread rather than have to restate everything in it in a new thread. The douche bags that don’t like newcomers and feel the need to rag on anyone that doesn’t already know what they know with the “that has already been discussed” or “ quit wasting everyone time with an old thread” I just put them on ignore. They obviously have little to contribute anyways.

From what I have seen since 2.0 came out, majority are not adding anything useful. Most just look like the FB equivalent to thumbs up. Or answering a question that was already answered multiple times in that thread.

By redirecting that old thread, as opposed to starting a new one, means that every one that sees the resurrected thread can read the original thread rather than have restate everything in it in a new thread.

Except a lot of people don't read the whole thread and stuff gets repeated over and over in basically every thread anyways, necro bump or not.

I.kind of like seeing how technology, ideas and opinions change over time... I have read my own posts in old threads and thought, "oh, yeah... I remember when I used to believe that..."

New information should equate to evolving thinking... if it didn't, a very small percentage of us would be here, and those that were, would be living in a cave and rolling rocks for grubs.
