I picked up some blue and red "Permatex" thread locker from C-tire. It is the permanent strength type. Before I peen my barrel and apply it, has anyone used Permatex on their oprod guide? I know Loctite is used frequently, but it wasn't available. Which Loctite do you recommend and where does one buy it if Permatex isn't so great? Thanks.

Permatex/loctite/whatever, all the same stuff, its just thread locker.. the red stuff is usually the permanent kind thats what i used on mine, no problems.

all thread locking compounds can be "un done" with heat. use the right compound for the right job. Blue is semi permanent/small screws. 271 is for bolts smalled then say half inch. 277 is beavier and good for larger fasteners. What would work great for this application would be locktite 670 bearing retainer. Locks solid, breaks down at 300 degreese c. Seing how the barrel gets hottish, having somthing that holds and can withstand the heat and viberation would be a good idea..no?

I have done over a 100 of these.

1. ] get the old [ probaBLY LOOSE ] op rod guide off the barrel lug.

2.] using a machinest's spring loaded center punch. "stipple" the barrel lug ev enly around the circumfrance to make a tighter interference fit

3.] using RED / permanent loctite, replace the op rod guide

4.] before the loctite sets up, WITH THE OP ROD GUIDE SUPPORTED, drive the RETAINING pin back in place, and then, using a BIG RUBBER MALLET, whack the op rod guide SO THAT IT ROTATES into perfect alignment,
so that the tip of the op rod is centered on the back of the piston.

5.] let the loctite set overnight, then shoot

PS: I have removed many of the RED loctited op rod guides. For this job, a BIG rubber mallet is your friend, and the barrel should be properly supported in a vise.
