I've heard from a lot of shooters that they don't put loctite on their screws. Other hobbies I've done, not using loctite is a sure way to have your stuff fall apart. I understand that all bolts should be torqued correctly and evenly. Recoil is a decent jolt capable of loosening stuff isn't it?

I use red loctite on my basemounts, but only when I never plan to take the base off. If you're planning on removing it at some point and still want it loctited, use the blue stuff.
Other than basemounts (ring screws ect) I just use armpower.

This is what I do, not saying other methods are wrong.;)

yeah... watch out... I had to drill a scope mount off a receiver once to get the friggin screws out

I just tighten to torque specs and haven't had anything back off yet.

I had read that the torque specs are for dry clean surfaces and that the introduction of something like loc tite may actually make them a litlte loose.

Either way, nothing spends enough time on my rifle for the loc tite to set. Everything is on the perpetual EE spin cycle.

Exact same here. 60% of the time, my method works... everytime.

I have found though YMMV that this depends a lot on the quality of the rings - I use TPS mostly and no loctite is ever needed but on cheaper rings like Millet and Weaver I have found it necessary to use blue loctite.

Here is a slightly different wrinkle on Loktite.
I had occasion to reset the screw that connects the barrel to the forward stock of my pre-64 Model 70 30-06. (I know there is a more technical name for that screw-I just can't remember it!). Anyway my gunsmith recommended green Loktite after getting the screw adjusted properly so that it would not work loose. Green Loktite is a penetrating Loktite useful to hold a screw in place after it is properly adjusted.
I use blue on my scope bases unless I am using torx screws. I do not use Loktite on rings. Never have had any problem with loose scopes.

Just in case you guys aren't aware. There is actually a purple loctite that is specific to low torque applications. Perfect for rings and bases.
Loctite 222

Interesting. I'm not clear on the application. How is it better than blue loktite
for installing bases and rings??
