Long barrel + muzzle brake VS riflecase

I got a question for those who own a rifle with 30'' and more barrel lenght.

My 308 has a 30'' barrel and I had trouble to find a hard case to fit it in. I have 1/2 inch play max on both ends.
New rifle will have a muzzle brake and same barrel lenght so it won't fit in any case I know and I would prefer not to shorten it.

What do you use to bring your big toy to the range ?

I just tried to order one of Cabela's 60 inches aluminum case but they don't want to ship to Canada

My target rifle only has a 28" barrel, and it pretty much fills up the Pelican Case I use. I just checked the Pelican Case Canada web site, and on the OEM page they say they will make a custom case to your needs. They don't say what it would cost, but it might be worth exploring.

If not another option would be to take the barreled action out of the stock so it fits in your case. Re-assemble the rifle at the range useing a torque wrench to keep everything as uniform as possible.

or cut an opening for the muzzle... and it sticks out. Use an old sock to protect the crown.... preferrably a "clean & washed" old sock. Barber shows up with muzzles sticking outta cases all the time... no you wouldn't fly it that way but if you're just travelling back and forth locally it's about the only way I know...
I mean these custom cases can get to 400 bucks quick enough... 400 gets you a new barrel so guess which I'd choose.

My barrel is closer to $500.00, and I can't afford a new one everytime I leave the house. The pelican can ride in the box of my pick up or up on the roof rack of my Jeep.

I have offered to circumcise both Norm's and John's rifle for free on the range with a hacksaw:D Just so they fit the case better.
Both have refuse this free gunsmithing service.:dancingbanana:

For soft sided cases 3w. centerthe group.com as them as well as Range Sports Unlimited.

Storm cases seem pretty good compared to Pelican, personally I have always used a soft case around the range, try centerthegroup . com. Paul makes good stuff.

good point Tom and Ian... I'd never thunk of soft cases... soft head and all. You don't need much to and from local ranges... I've seen Paul's they are good and he even shoots...

Tom can you do a crown with that hacksaw I might be needing that shortly? Pastors got one of those funny tents... you could set up at the back of the range like those windshield glass guys who fix stone chips in mall parking lots... never mind...

As I mentioned earlier, give Dave at Tiger Tactical a call. You will have a tough case and as fancy or not as you want. These are tough cordura padding etc.

When you consider the cost of your investment, you might want to re-evaluate how much you think you are saving..... This thread has been a laugh...

Cordelss Dremel tool would work, no need to drrag around a small gennerator!
I use a drag bag to protect my rifles when I am on the river.
I get lots of water in the boat sometimes, when we are running rapids, knowing the rifle is dry is a big stress saver!

I was thinking a cordless drill with a chamfer bit to take off any burrs made by the hacksaw blade.:p But hey, a cordless Dremal and a small zip-cut would save some time. I could even do this between relays:D
I think I will get a sign made for my range cart that says "Free barrel circumcisions while you wait" See Rabi Maynard for details.:dancingbanana:

A pipe cutter avoids all the nasty saw marks, and nicely chokes the bore as well.

hah, pipe cutter... that's rich! never thought of that... chokes the bore hah... and here I thought Bob had something new in his barrels where he says it gets smaller near the muzzle...

For soft cases, Kolpin makes one with a "caterpiller track" or some such along the bottom. Sized for a long barrelled shotgun with a scope. Will accept my Musgrave/Robertson with 30" barrel. The camo is a bit tacky, but the case works fine. Has handles, a side pouch (great for breechflags, etc.) plus a sling. You can even get them at Cdn. Tire.

Longer case or shorter rifle :) hmmmm
How bout a take down rifle system???

McMillan A5 stock is already delivered to gunsmith so I can't change it.

I would prefer hard case over soft case but I will take a look to Drag Bags suggestions. (or buy a pipe cutter ;) )

Thanks to everyone who helped
