Long barrels and hard cases??

Hi,

I was putting together an ELR build with 28-29 inch barrel with a compensator it is likely going to be too large for the largest Pelican or nanuk case.

I am looking for a lockable hard case that I can bring on a plane. Anyone have any leads on a hardcase with 60 inch interior?
 
Curious what stock you’re going to run?

To answer your question SKB’s 50 cal case is about 62” internal.

I can luckily just pop off my buttstock on my eliseo and have miles of room in a 1750 pelican with a 30” barrel. Cut the foam to eventually run a 32” barrel on my tr rifle.
 
From hard experience, I would strongly recommend against a super long case. Take the barreled action out of the stock... even take off the scope and pack in the shortest case possible.

Airline transport is not your friend...

I would watch the length for airplane use. Was just trying to find the length limit but was unable to quickly. Ran into this problem last year bringing a couple guns back to Saskatchewan. Ended up buying the Nanuk 995. Its exterior length is 55" and the interior is 52" and a bit longer on the diagonal but not 60". I agree with Jerry, take the stock off. I would keep the scope on.
 
A chassis with a folding butt us my solution. Jerry, above, probably has the best one though. Cut your foam to hold the action separately from the stock.
 
Thanks for your suggestions all. I didn't think about taking it out of the chassis. I was considering taking the compensator off but taking it out of the chassis seems easier. Looking at air Canada regulations, the extra long cases should qualify as an oversized piece. I don't think nanuk 995 would qualify as a regular checked bag. For instance, a regular checked bag for air Canada is 62 linear inches (adding together its greatest outside height, width and length – wheels and handles included). And there is about a $100-150 surcharge for an oversize bag max 115 linear inches.

I'm running an MPA Matrix, so there's not an option of a folding stock. It's overall length is 52 inches, so I can't use the largest Pelican or nanuk (I have both) unless I remove the chassis or compensator.

For those of you who search this in the distant future, I found two other cases that would also work if you wanted it to be one piece.

Americase at-50 aluminum case. They don't make it anymore but some Canadian retailers have a few in stock. It is 60 inches on the interior but only around 10 inches wide (would need to remove scope).

Pelican's 1615 and 1700 both fit into the allowable checked bag dimensions (i.e.: 62 linear inches), but you have to keep an sharp eye on the total weight of case & contents. An airline may be perfectly happy to assess an 'overweight' charge, and - provided that no ammunition was contained within the case - it might even be legal to check a firearm in an 'overweight' case, but Transport Canada doesn't allow 'explosives excepted' to be checked in an 'overweight' case.
