Hello all,

Does anyone have an idea of how many No4's were produced at Canadian Small Arms Limited (Long Branch) 1941-1945, 1945-1950?

I've heard sub 100,000 but I've also heard 900,000+

Thanks,
Kevin

Interesting read...

... In the final quarter of 1944, total production levels reached 814,829 rifles...

At that point, they were producing 32,500(ish) rifles per month, and they were at full production until the end of the war. Even after VE Day, AFAIK, it took quite a while to wind production down. That would most likely put production not just over 900K, but north of 1million.

well if you just look at serial numbers you will get a good idea of how many were made.

90L###X that's 900000 rifles.

so your 900000+ rifles is correct. but less then 1 million.

and Savage ran out of serial numbers when they hit the 1 million rifles and started again with 0C###XX adding one more digit.

the next part that you have to figure out is where in the serial number range did they switch from Mk1 to Mk1* to get your answer.
