Long Distance Practice Rig: Suggestions for Optics?

Hi folks,

Currently putting together a long-distance shooting practice rig and wanted some advice on optics...

CZ 455 Varmint with a bull barrel, wanting to strap an absurdly overpowered optic to it. Going to be pushing match grade 22LR out to 200+ meters for eventual graduation to something bigger (.308, 7mm rem mag, etc.) down the line, but will start by practicing the basics for next year+ on this build (maybe cull local rabbit and squirrel populations while I'm at it).

The friend who talked me in to assembling the rig is using a Falcon 5.5-25 x 50 FFP IR on his, but my first inclination is always to do something a little different (no practical reason for this, I'm just insecure and want to be perceived as "special"), so I was wondering if anyone had some competitors for the Falcon to suggest? Would be looking for something with at least 25X magnification at the top end.

Thanks and cheers,

Thanks bsand, that thing looks pretty sweet.

Should have given a price range in my first post but this is definitely still in the price band... was planning on spending as much on the glass as the rest of the build, so anything south of $1K is cool.

Thanks for the tip,

I would second the Veracity.

I just picked up the (lower powered) 2-10X42 (strictly for hunting) and have to say, for the money there is very little that even comes close to it (sorry Vortex and Leupold fans, I would have had to spend double for the same features).

those new falcons have very nice glass compared to the old ones. BUT, i'd wait to see how the long term durability of these are compared to the older 5-25's which were craptastic.

another vote for sightron s3, ffp if you can manage it.

I ran a vortex crossfire 2 6-24x50 BDC all last year on my LR Savage TR.The cheap vortex tracks extremely well as I was constantly cranking the turrets all the time. With Max elevation adj and bottom hash mark on the reticle I could hit Zero with minimag 36g at 200yds.The 40gr had more drop at 200 with the little extra weight. This was done without the need of a 20 moa base.Best group I got was 3.25" with 10 shots at 200yds.You could probably do better with the SH HV ammo as I would like to try that for distance shooting. The Reticle on the cross fire 2 BDC is reasonably fine for target work.I paid $319 and comes with a real warranty.I have the cheap mueller 8-32 target dot on TR now but haven't shot it enought to recomend it.With the x fire you can just see the bullet holes at 200yds,much cleare with my sightron 6-24 but also twice the price.

I rock the Falcons on my rimfire (22 and 17hmr) they track well and are good for me at 200 yards. Rimfire beyond 200 is a bit of a guessing game or you are shooting at big targets. I shot at 4" clays.

Awesome, thanks for all the feedback guys!

I now have some decisions to make, and some Christmas shopping to do for myself.

Cheers

Im happy with the 5.5 x25 Falcon Im using on my cz rig but I would never mount it on anything other than a .22 training rifle idea. For a little bit more there's much nicer glass out there. Its always a balincing act ;)
