I have a Lever gun and a couple semi-autos set up with scout rails, also a .454 revolver with rings I could use to mount but I am not sure how that would work out. Looking for recommendations on a fixed 4x under $1000.

I am interested in the Leupold offering (FX-II Handgun?) but I can't seem to find one to look at in person. It will be used to hunt through some rough areas so durability will be important along with clarity/light gathering. Any advice is appreciated!

The FX-II Handgun is available in 4x. I may be expecting too much with that option though. I'm mostly in need of a scope for my .454 R92, with hopes one will work with some other rifles I have.

Not sure about other brand, but a Leupold hangun scope, would not work as scout scope. They have a different eyerelief range.

With 18" of relief and a supposedly massive eyebox I'm not sure why it wouldn't. As I said though, I can't find one to look at. I'm open to any decent brand but if I can't have at least 4x I'll just buy a red dot. No interest in a variable so I may be SOL.

Vortex scout 2x7-35. I have three mounted on Contender pistols. One of is setting on top of my 30-30 surviving a few hundred rounds so far. For the price an excellent scope. Problem with most pistol scopes is not enough eye relief for rifles. Most scout scopes will also have proper eye relief for pistol. I tried my Burris elite on a rifle but mounted to far out. I have a Simmons pistol scope that will work as a scout. I was given that one. I tried destroying it on top of my 454 Casull, survived 400 rounds and now on the SKS. Basically you have have the scopes in your hands if your going swap pistol and scout scopes around.

I have a Savage "Scout" rifle here with a Burris 2 3/4 power scope. My eye is circa 10 1/2 inches back from the eyepiece. Some makers distinguish between a IER (Intermediate Eye Relief) and an EER (Extended Eye Relief) - I think the first is for "Scout" applications on rifles and second is for handguns.

I do not own a handgun to try - extending my arm/hand out as if I was holding a revolver, my guesstimate with tape measure is that my eye would be circa 18" from the scope - is not double the distance of the Scout set-up, but getting up there.

Just picked up a FX 4x33 fixed this week. Looking to see and hear peoples thoughts on it and other recommendations in this thread.

The eye-box (or whatever it's called) on my handgun scope is not useable when held in the 7"-11" range you'd need for a scout mount

Yourself and medvedqc have me holding off on my first pick for now. It's unfortunate but I am sure someone will suggest something suitable. Thanks for all the replies so far.

Lay your scope on table with Objective lens to left and eye-piece to right. Shine a flashlight into the objective end. Hold your hand vertical and slide to right of the eye piece - you will see a small circle of light - when it is at the smallest that you can get, that is the distance from the eye piece to the retina in your eye to get most complete in focus view. If you can, try that with a few scopes, or set at various powers, or altering the eye-piece focus. Some people will use index card, some will use short block of wood - with old school flash light with filament in bulb, you can get sharply focused small image of that filament.

I have never owned an FX series scope, but owned and own many of the earlier M8 series - fixed 2 1/2, 3, 4 and 6 power on rifles here, now. No complaints about them at all - purely utilitarian workhorses, I think. I have hunted with Leupold 2-7 and 3-9, but when time came for the shot, was whatever power the scope was set at - not something that I thought to "adjust" at that time.

It really helps to learn to aim and fire using a fixed scope, with both eyes open - much easier to do that with lower powered scopes to start - your brain can learn to accept two different images from your two eyes - just needs some practice at doing so.

I won't be putting much more thought into the handgun scope idea. I really didn't want a variable but it sounds like my only option if I want to make it to 4x.

sorry, i tried one on my scout and i wanted to like it mine was even changed for a german 4 reticle but sorry it did not work for me.

I would not use a handgun scope on a rifle. I have 2 of the cheapish Vortex LER scopes and they do work. Around $200 used on the EE give or take and they work.
