Is there any danger of birdshot hitting longer muzzle brakes? And do larger muzzle brakes cause the blast/sound directed back in your face too much to be comfortable?

The shot is contained in the wad till it leaves the barrel. Owned a lot of shotguns with porting and not one blew anything back at my face.
What gun with muzzle brake are you talking about?

See below. Leaves barrel & then enters choke on my ol Model 20 from Sears.........

Not all muzzle brakes continue the bore diameter to the exit side, lots have a more open chamber with a hole on the far side for the projectile to exit. That design absolutely could let the wad petals start spreading and cause problems.

Well this ol one sure spits the wad out the sides, depending on shells used. Shot 1000s of rnds outta it and had to pic the wads outta muzzle cage all the time. 1/2" to 1" gap, between end of barrel and scew in chokes. Always questioned that design, but still shoot it. Wear my safety glasses now; not like 45 yrs ago shooting it.......

That's not a muzzle brake, it's a multi directional compensator.

They used to work great on an Open division shotgun in IPSC until our douchebag of a liberal government said that they were too scary for us to own. Google Open division shotguns and you'll find out everything you want to know about muzzle brakes on a shotgun.

OK........ I always called it that. Looked sweet and I thought it helped with recoil, back when I weighed 150 lbs. Maybe I was just assuming/hoping that it was a muzzle brake. ;)

1st gun Dad bought for me and still precious today. I don't mind it spitting a bit of wad here & there. Shot my limit of ducks with it for many years, before moving to semis.
