I'm thinking of getting a 10 inch Troy free float rail (MRF-MX) to run on my 14.5" Norc, I know someone here has done a similar job, by using a dremel to take off the front sight tower, while leaving the gas block pinned in place. I'm pretty sure it's the only way to have a truly solid low-pro gas block. Anyone see any issues or problems (and if you've done this please chime in on how it works and anything I've missed)

Or you could try a STAR-CX-EBR... I have their old model on my 16" Armalite, and I got to keep the FSB intact!

For the shaved FSB, I know that Walt (Armseast, great guy!) does it, give him a call. I'm sure he'll tell you everything you need to know.

I shaved down the front sight of my old AR, I just used a small dremel tool and put the upper in a clamp. Didn't take long, and I sprayed the bare metal with some black anti-rust stuff from Canadian Tire just to be safe. No big deal at all, just go slow and don't cut away more than you need to.

Sweet post, exact same thing i want to do, only I never thought of grinding down the front sight, i was going to replace it with a low profile one.
Anyone have any pictures of 10" rails on a 14.5" barrel? or other lengths? 8"? 12"?

How "solid" does your low pro gas block need to be when its under the rail? I mean, its not going to be hit against anything getting in/out of a vehicle, and nothing is going to be mounted/attatched to it. And if you follow instructions and red loctite the set screws into barrel dimples I cant imagine it ever moving.

Just my opinion, but chopping FSBs looks like s**t. And it's ghetto as hell.

As far as ghetto goes, Dude, it's a Norc :D - but we are still going to be pushing a bunch of nasty hot gasses through there at high pressure, so I like solid.

Generally if you chop one you're gonna cover it with a rail, so I don't see how it could look like s**t. Some people (myself included) just don't wanna mess with a working gas system by replacing gas blocks etc. It's much easier and quicker to just chop the sight off.

+1 on that - if it works, don't eff with it.
