Long range .308 loads out there?

Hey everyone I've been shooting long range with my Ruger American chambered in .308 with a Bushnell elite tactical 5-15x40mm shooting 165gr Hornady SST's with 44 grains of IMR 4895.
There's lots of controversy of maximum lethal range for .308, so just keep in mind I don't plan on shooting anything at something extreme but have quite the addiction of ringing the long range gong at 1000yrds.

I'm very pleased with the SST but would like something with a higher ballistic co. as well as a bonded bullet. When I shot my moose this year at 300 yards the bullet completely shed it's core after breaking the shoulder bone.

I'm looking at shooting 168gr preferred but what's working for anyone else for long range?
Been looking at Berger 168 gr Match Grade Classic Hunter HYBRID bullet.
Price doesn't matter to me as long as it's within reason :p
 
I would stay away from bergers if it will be a hunting bullet. You could try canadian made matrix ballistics. I have some 168gr rebated boat tail coming my way in the new year. I really hope they shoot well. I plan on loading them in the 30-06 and 308. They are also a bonded bullet.
 
Swift Scirocco II, and extremely accurate, higher BC hunting bullet.

Your range with game will be limited to the velocity you have at that particular range to have the bullet start it's expansion.

As for long range and hitting the steel, just need an accurate load and be able to calculate and adjust for hits, you will be adjusting no matter how flat your projectile travels.

Nosler Accubond 165's Have been great for me since they released a few years ago.
It's a Bonded bullet with the BC of a Hornady 168grn Amax
"30 Cal .308 168 gr A-MAX® Ballistic Coefficient (G1) 0.475 Sectional Density 0.253"

I wish Nosler would make a 175Grn Accubond in .308 It would be a really good long range round for a 7.62x51 Nato/308.

ps: ive also shot Barnes TSX in 165grn and TTSX (tipped) in 168Grn I had limited success with them. They never did get shooting as well as the Accubonds did in either of my 308 Hunting Rifles.
I switched to accubonds and never looked back.

On paper barnes new 175Grn LRP <-- found there , looks to be decent.

One thing you have to understand about the Barnes bullets is they are extremely long compared to lead based rounds and if your loading in a magazine you loose capacity also.

And very expensive also.

I can take a picture if you need a visual aid to understand how much longer they are.

Hornady interbond. Same shape and BC as the SST. Shoot the SST at smaller game and steel. Shoot the interbond at moose sized game. Should shoot to the same poi and have identical come ups/holdoffs.
 
I've found that 180gr Sierra Game Kings shoot as well as 175gr Sierra Match Kings. out of my .308 Tikka.

I've always had luck with sierra gamekings in all of my rifles. A very under-rated bullet in my opinion. On boxing day I was shooting 150gr game kings into 2.25" groups at 300y out of my tikka 308
 
180gr accubond is wicked for big game under 300yds - just a tad more oomph than the 165 - use that for hunting - they are pricey
For 1000 yd gongs, the old standby 175 SMK - cheap and effective! Most rifles will shoot these bullets good.

This summer we did some trials at long range with the above two bullets - same load, two different bullets - the NAB was only a few inches lower at 500 yds with our rifles.
 
Use a 175 or 178 match bullet for 1,000 yard shooting. 165's and 168's work best out to 600. Better to forget the hunting bullets altogether.
If you broke Bullwinkle's shoulder, you'd be a bit put out too. A target bullet doesn't have to do anything but get there.
 
He said he doesn't plan to hunt long range with it in the first post, just wants a dual purpose bullet that he can hunt with and also shoot gongs at long range.
