I stumbled across this video of a guy shooting his AR out to 860 yards. Didnt know if its been posted before but I thought it was excellent. It also shows time delay of sound. Just goes to show .223 should not be questioned when it comes to long range, same goes for AR's. Enjoy!

62 grainers lose 90% of their energy and drop about 300 inches at 800m. Not much left to take care of business when they get there.
 
Definately agree with Gunnerlove... You might be able to hit your target at 800, but that far out the tiny bullet doesn't retain much of its lethal force.

In my opinion I don't think there's much value in practicing long range .223 marksmanship.
 
i see some dont like the 223 for long range shooting. i agree it doesnt have alot of gas at 800m but its cheap to shoot, compared to a 338 lapua, 408 cheytac, 50 bmg. this being said i think trying to do 1000yard with a 223 is great practise and affordable at that. i just bought a 24" bushmaster varminter (it is in transit to my house as we speak, props to wolverine supplies) but i hope to reach out there with it. one last thing and ill shut up. anyone got any 223 recipes for long range i got a 1:9 twist.

I owned a rifle like that.. I loved it..

If it has the two stage trigger, you will love it...
 
It is likely re barreled to stabilize 80gr. bullets that is whats used for long range target shooting with the AR. as far as standing there and catching the bullet go ahead and luck has nothing to do with it .
 
I have shot the 223 out of a target rifle at 1000 yards and have tested 223 vs 308 ammo at 1000 yards. The 80 gr Sierra vs the 155 gr Sierra. The 223 ha dslightly less wind drift.

I won a 1000 yard match with the 223. The 1:9 is marginal with the 80. It will work if loaded to max velocity. My rifle is throated for the 80 and I use 25.5 gr of RL15. I suggest you start at 24 gr and see if you can work up. I seat bullet about 10 thou off the rifling.

The short barrel may not get enough velocity (RPM) to stabalize. I get 3000 fps out of a 30" barrel.

A 1:7 20" would work.

That is about twice the ME of a good 22 RF. Not humane to hunt with, but would probably be humane enough to work on someone shooting back.

These are loads longer then mag length out of a bolt gun though no? I have seen people doing things to AR mags to get long 80gr tips in there, but have not played with it myself. I'd be interested in hearing how people are getting 80gr tips to work at mag length.
 
A mag lenght 80 would never stabalize with a 1:9 barrel. 1:7 would work, but a faster powder than RL15 is required because the deep seated 80 would take up a lot of powder space.

The 75 or 77 gr HP would be better.

I think this thread started with a Rem bolt gun.

Yeah, that is where I am at. Some of the 77gr loads lead me to think there is some powder room left, but the mag length 80 says time to dump powder. :/ I am really new to trying to get the AR out there though.
