I am moving to Ontario and am now looking at purchasing a black powder rifle for big game hunting. I am not interested in ball or conical, only in using sabot's for long range accuracy. I have looked at Knight with their garentee of 1 1/2 inches at 100 yards and of Thompson Centre fire and Savage. All seem to have good rifles. My question is this:

Which rifle combination will give me the most accurate performance for a big game rifle? Barrel length, twist, calibre, bullet, etc. Does one rifle stand out as being more accurate than their competeters. I am looking at performance out to 200 meters.

Knight has garentee's of accuracy on their web page. Savage has rifles that can use smokeless powder and TC rifles claim simplicity of cleaning. The web pages alone I can't compair there performance in accuracly and so I post this in the hopes that the black powder comunity may be able to answere, which combination of barrel, bullet and action will give me the best accuracy for my buck.

Long range accuracy in the past was obtained by using heavy bullets in rifles like the Whiteworth [spelling?]. They were .45 cal and used 550 grain bullets, and a twist of 1 in 28". They were accurate to at least 500 yards. I think you would have to be a good judge of range, but that is what they used.

Is there any specific reason you want to limit yourself to the use of Sabots??

I have read a quite a few articles on the subject, with the rages discussed from a target shooting stand point, that would rival most modern hunting rifles.

That general consensus was that the most effective projectile to use at muzzle loader velocities were big heavy, and long for their caliber connicals, In essence these guys were mimicking breach loading Black powder cartridge rifle performance, with a muzzle loader.

Something to keep in mind, because choosing you projectile may to some extent determine what rifle you choose.

I was choosing to use sabot's, because I was under the impression that they were the most accurate, perhaps I was wrong in this assumption. The purpose of the rifle I will choose is for hunting big game in Ontario.

So I am looking for a projectile that will give me first of all the best possible accuracy, Knight rifles publish on their web sight as having garrenteed accuracy. One is 1 1/2 inch at 100, another is 4 inches at 200 meters. So which rifle out there will give me the best accuracy and with which projectile. Second, and perhaps less important I am interested in the terminal performace of the bullet. It needs to drop quickly any big game I may engage. I believe that all black powder bullets will do this nicely.

So there you have it, I don't want to spend a lot of money getting a rifle that I may regret later on. Every manufacurer will tell me that they sell the best rifle. I am hoping to find out here, which combination will give me the best accuracy for my dollar.

I'm happy with my T/C Encore. Shot a doe last fall 220yrds with a 295 gr powerbelt and 150gr 777 pellets. Dropped her like a stone. I have some new Barnes expanders to try and will let you know how they do.

I am impressed that you know what you want, that way you will be able to “back in” to the rifle you want.

In your case, I would suggest you spend some time on the following web site. As per board rules I can not hot link, but add the appropriate w’s to prbullet.com.

These Canadian folks (Manitoba) really know what they are doing with regards to getting the most out of black powder hunting rifles.

I believe you will find enough info on their sight to aid you in your decision.

Keep us in the loop, and let us know what you decide.
