I have pushed 139gr sst and gmx to just over 3000fps. Also had 162 eld's up near 2850fps. I am going to try a different powder and see if more speed is possible.
Might try some 180gr hornady eld-m the bc is .796 g1. I am thinking 2600 might just be possible. That should put them at 1050fps at 1700 yards

Wouldn't the .284Win case be a better choice? Greater capacity. Probably want a long action, though, to allow long bullets to be seated out, and not take up powder space.
 
P&D in Edmonton had some a couple weeks ago. 284 is a good cartridge. Years ago when I wanted a lightweight long-range sheep rifle, I built one on a Rem 600. Extended the mag box (couldn't buy them back then) to allow a 3.2" col in the short action. Put it in a a Brown Precision "Pounder" stock. Weaver aluminum mounts amd rings for more weight reduction, lightest scope I could buy at the time. It's a great rifle and cartridge. I also run a 600 in 7mm-08 AI, and the 284 is just more of everything. - dan
 
I used a pair of 6.5-284s. Excellent performance. Recoil was more than I expected. About the same as a 308. Poor barrel life.

Then re-barrelled to 6.5-08 Ackly (Or 260Rem Ackly, if you prefer). launches 140 gr bullets at around 2900 fps. Very accurate at long range. less recoil and longer barrel life. Will shoot factory 260Rem if needed.

However, if you want to be really exotic, get a .243AI shooting the new Badlands Precision 96 or 105 grain ICBM's. Badass new little lathe turn solids. Hammering a .6xx bc bullet at ~3400 fps will make for a low recoiling laser beam.

Im in the works of building a 243 AI right now. Was going to be using it for coyotes deer etc instead of shooting my short mag. Maybe Ill just throw it in a MDT and use it for this as well...
