Hi guys, I'm about to star long range shooting.. here in my town we have a 600 yars shooting range so Why not shoot a 600 yars.. I wanna know what kind and what weigth of bullets to use in my 30-06 to shoot at long range....

Is it Better with heavier bullets or ligther bullets...

All thanks in advance...

heavier..to a point

in a 1:10 twist 30-06 I would look at a sleek 168-180 grain bullet pushed to 2700-2800 f/s. Amax, Berger VLD, MatchKings, Nosler Ballistic Tips...and similar

A very good long range shooter in the States, told me a few years ago that more .30-06 long range matches have been won with 180 grain Match-Kings than with any other type of bullet.

I had been relating how accurate the basic Federal 180 gr. Classic load was out of my BSA .30-06 (sporterized Pattern of 1917) when he told me.

I'd actually go a little lighter. The old 155 grain "Palma" bullet or a Lapua Scenar can outperform the heavier Matchkings and similar heavier bullets.

too bad the 208 gr a-max didn't stabilize in that..but you never know? should give'em a try...Sierra's are hard to beat though..but i've been shooting the Nosler J4 competition 168's and they are sweet too, cheaper than Sierra.

sounds great.... b72471...

Thank you very much guys for your suggestions..

I'll surely give a try to those matchking...and The Ballistic tip I already have..

Thanks

Try some 168 or 175 grain Matchkings. The 175's are better past 600 though. The Palma bullets will work well too. Serious shooters those Palma guys. 155 grain match bullets only, with iron sights, at 800, 900 and 1,000 yards. Mind you, the rifles weigh 12 to 14 pounds.

You said it Sunray.

The long barrels of the Palma rifles help get the velocity of the 155s up there too, but with handloading we can get them fast enough that if you compare the numbers (again, especially with the Scenars) you can see they compare very favourably and in some cases better than the heavier match rounds.

Besides Sierra, Berger makes some great match bullets too!:)

You can always call up Dave Brown (or one of the other bullet techs at Sierra) and discuss what you want to do. They are more than happy to help you work up a load to your rifle.

I spoke to Dave Brown a few years ago, and he was telling me about helping a young guy get his rifle set up, and work up a load, for the Wimbledon Cup at Camp Perry.

Their bullet techs are very knowledgeable.

Is a guy hooped with a 1-12 twist? What would the heaviest bullet be for that? Not ment to hijack just curious? Thanks Harold
