I am trying to learn more about Long distance shooting and competitions. I checked out the ORA website and noticed alot of competitions but do they offer any courses?

I've read alot of articles and books on the topic but it's always nice to get some hands on experience from people who do this kinda stuff often.

Also do the intro days with the ORA actually allow you to go shoot on the longer ranges? I'd really like to go try out some 300+ yard lanes.

The ORA days are great, I highly recommend them. You get class time, plus some 300/200yd range time with the club guns, or you can bring your own non-restricteds. It was one of the better run intro days I have seen, and convinced me to join late last year.

The ORA has practice days, plus apparently can hook you up with mentor's. But I think just showing up and competing will get you involved with people who can help out.
 
So what kind of stuff do you actually learn on the intro day?

I am fairly new to all of this but have learned a bit about dope, swag, mil-dot ranging, MOA conversions, breathing, trigger control, etc.

Can I expect similar information?
 
More of the same, plus range safety in regards to DND ranges. Target marking in the butts, firing point procedure. The classrom stuff also covers all the different shooting disciplines the ORA has to offer. From Blackpowder-Target Rifle-F Class- Service Conditions-Swiss.
If you attend an Introductory Day you get a free return day. Pick a day when there will be multiple distances scheduled.
On this note the ORA is trying next year to schedule matches on Saturdays and long range practices on Sundays when ever possible.
 
There is a fellow from SK., Ian McMurchy, that has a school on long range shooting. I haven't gone myself but 2 friends went and were impressed. Ian travels around, and I'm not sure where the schools are held, but Ian is a moderator at 'longrange hunting' so you might try him there. I have known him for many years since his days with the SK. gov't and he is pretty thorough. Mark
