Hi all, I wanted to post a note about the precision rifle course I took a couple of weeks ago with a friend that was taught by Longshot. I don't know if he wants his real name used here so I'll go by CGN name.

My background is short-range shooting, some hunting and very limited experience trying to reach out past a couple of hundred yards. Needless to say I knew nothing about how to deliberately place a bullet where you want it at great distance so I went into the course excited totally green. Not having bought a suitable rifle I had tons of questions about the gear as well as everything else related to this discipline that has always seemed to be a black art.

We met up at my friend's house and Longshot arrived for the classroom day which started with some background, got into every part of the rifle and gear then progressed through the theory and practice. All the information was explained through experience, examples and every question we had was answered in a way that made sense and flowed logically. I work in IT and have attended some really expensive training and I can honestly say I've been on few courses and training sessions that are as well prepared and taught as expertly. No question was unanswered and along with heads full of knowledge we finished the day with a lot of resources to explore for more information down the road. The hands on we had with some very cool rifles and the basics of different shooting positions was great to say the least.

The next day... when we went out to do some shooting... aka the fun part (grin) we went out and setup some targets and then started the day. I like to think I'm an average shot and a fairly quick study but as Longshot took us through the practical application of what we learned the day before, a whole new world opened up! The rifle zeroing, environmental and mechanical setup got us started then as we got comfortable with the shooter / spotter work we were taking deliberate shots and making adjustments instead of just winging it as I'd done for years. For me, the excitement and satisfaction of hitting steel at 800 plus yards having calculated and "walked in" on the target is the coolest thing I've done with a firearm yet. Over the course of the day we took turns spotting and shooting and with Longshot's help ended the day with a real feeling of accomplishment that we had learned something and now had a great foundation to build on.

Along with Longshot's vast experience, skill and effective teaching style he's also a really good guy who is easy to get along with. This made both days a lot of fun as well as challenging and rewarding and I like learning things from people who enjoy and put themselves into the process and he is definitely one of those rare folks.

Hopefully this is the right place to post this, I saw a thread or two about precision rifle courses here and figured it would be a good spot so if you are looking to learn from a real pro / guru / shooting Yoda, definitely contact Longshot!

In closing, the course he offers is flat out awesome!

Haha! I'm not sure who had more fun mate you or me! ;) A big well done to both of you guys. You were very quick learners! Hopefully you get a rifle soon and we can get out again!

Sounds great and a good course ! Well done Longshot , you ever plan on coming out to Ontario ...we have a nice 600 yard range here in Petawawa...lol

I am going to second everything Mr Duzr says. I was the friend in the story above. I never really enjoyed going out to a crappy shooting pit, and blazing away at rocks and cans, throwing money and ammo away...it got me thinking about precision shooting and how that might satisfy me as far as feeling accomplished goes, when going to the range. The most I had shot was 150 yards until I made my way up to Hedley and shot out there with a friend. ~500 yards, and I was hooked. This was DEFINITELY what I was looking for. I sorted out some training and Mr Longshot was more than happy to oblige. Great guy, great shooter and excellent instructor. He has inspired me to practice, and perhaps compete next year....providing I am comfortable enough :D

I'd like to see both you fellas out to a couple of matches next year! You should get out and try the f class stuff as well! Small targets and lots of wind to play in. The guys put on some great matches in kamloops!
