OK would like to do some long range shooting but not sure where to start. Been looking at a Mossberg MVP LC in 308, but am not sure.
Big issue is cost, so not sure if just pick up a Remington 700 and build something up over time or what....I am open to suggestions.

Savage 10 is a great place to start if your just starting out as well, they make solid rifles, and come in at sometimes HALF the cost of a R700. I just picked up a new Savage 10TR, and with the money saved over buying a Remington 700, I was able to get a full MDT HS3 Chassis and Skeleton stock system (lightly used from fellow nutter), plus some other accessories on the way.

Remington are a good rifle mind you (as long as their Quality Control was spot on that day), very customizable, lots of aftermarket parts. I have had a couple myself.

Savage is growing in popularity, and thus more aftermarket kit is available and coming.

The benefits of my rifle versus my choice of R700 (Heavy barrel 5R model):

Savage:
Price- Savage was 749.99 (5R 1589.99)

Trigger- Savage came with accutrigger (not perfect BUT REALLY good, better then any other trigger on any of my firearms *I have no upgraded aftermarket triggers on any other firearm*, and better then both of my previous Remingtons)

Stock- Savage comes with accustock (similar to HS precision stock offered by Remington on their models, however the HS precision is better IMHO)

Magazine- Savage came with 10 round detachable box magazine (most of the R700's come with internal mag)

Barrel- Savage came with heavy 24" 1:10 barrel threaded, plus thread protectorp (5R has 24" 11.25:1 barrel non threaded)

Bolt- Savage comes with HUGE tactical bolt handle out of box (5R has typical remington bolt handle, small...)

Safety- Savage has a 3 position tang safety while the Remington has the side mounted 2 position safety (I prefer tang safety's).

So since I am no military sniper, nor F-Class champion or hoping to be either, the Savage was the more economical choice for me and enabled me to get alot more out of my rifle quicker and cheaper then the Remington would allow rather then taking the time and money it would cost to upgrade the Remington to get the features I wanted vs just getting most of them out of the box with Savage.

Again, this is just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt. Then take that salt, and rim a wide mouth glass, and make a margarita!! ;)

I picked up a Remington 700 SPS DM in 308 for about $425. Found out the trigger was part of a recall so I swapped out the stock trigger for a Trigger Tech one for another $180. Floated the stock and the rifle shot pretty decently. Saved up a little more money and found a Magpul Hunter stock and mag conversion on the forums, never installed, $375.

Another way is look into picking up a used Savage 10TR. Can pick one of them up pretty decently priced, around $600-700 for a stock one.

Thank you for your response this is exactly the type of advice I was looking for, will keep my eye out for a savage 10 tr.
Glass, what would you recommend for a scope to go with it I was looking one with the Christmas tree reticle. Any suggestions.

I too am saving up for that item as my next purchase, and for my needs I will most likely be going with a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP Riflescope with EBR-2C MRAD (Link to Scope in Question!)

There has also been a Gen II version of this scope announced but is 5-25 power, new laser etched turrets, moved the dial for the reticle light, different Zero stop system.

It has the Christmas tree style reticle as well.

Another option but doesn't have the same reticle, but according to several reviews I have read, has slightly better glass is the Sightron III series. They also have FFP models available as well (If you are unsure what FFP is vs SFP click me).

Have you considered a 6.5x55? Tradeex has quite a selection of used CG63 target rifles to choose from. You can get a decent rifle for less than 500.00 that would be a much better choice than the Mossberg
