Long range shooting in Southern ontario

CFB Borden is the place the ORA uses for shooting out to 1000 yards. Any reason that you are not in favour of Borden? The next closest 900m/1000 yard range in Ontario is Connaught Ranges in Ottawa. If you want to travel the US side for 1000 yard ranges there is Camp Perry, Ohio or Grayling Mich.

No issues with Borden, I’m just looking for somewhere I can shoot a little more often.

Bordon is good if you have a caliber they like. Unless it has changed they do not allow 6.5 creed.?

The DND can at times be a little slow in updating the approved calibres for their ranges. Even though Mons range is rated for .50 BMG, smaller/newer calibers may not be on the "approved list". Changes are requested through the ORA every year or whenever the flavour of the month changes. Common sense does not always apply to the DND when requesting these changes.

William97, Right now with the COVID-19 the DND are not releasing any range dates. When it does the ORA will apply for range use just about every weekend the ranges are available. There is also mid week evening practices that will be booked.

Sorry had the ranges mixed up it is Petawawa that will not allow 6.5 creed. Perhaps a trip to Borden next time.

I am still a bit mystified,if Petewawa allows center fire shooting why would the 6.5 Creedmoor be singled out as prohibited there.
Any idea why?
It is used in both national course and Fclass shooting.:p

Specifically for Petawawa, As per Barney’s clinic posts:
Caliber Restrictions

Caliber Restrictions are IN place so .223, .308, .303, .338 calibers are allowed ONLY (hey, it's their sandbox)

I believe 7.62x39 is the only other right caliber allowed.

Makes absolutely no sense at all, does it?

Mons Range (Borden) has a 1000 yrd practice every Wed afternoon. Plus some other practices and matches.

The ORA has lots of shooting every week at Borden... when this covid stuff passes...

And 6.5 is allowed on Mons.

Okay that sounds decent, might be worth the drive. Do you know how the ranges are run by the ORA?

Check out the ORA website https://ontariorifleassociation.ca
Be aware the these are usually a whole day commitment. Starting at 8 am for range set up and safety briefing. And be prepared to help tear it down and clean up, usually ending around 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Some groups stop for lunch, some try to shoot right through. Bring plenty of water, snacks, lawn chair, sun screen, hat, ammo.
If the heat index is too high the base will shut the ranges down. This is beyond the control of the ORA. It is also possible that the ORA gets bumped off the range due to military requirements, again beyond the control of the ORA. I would advise contacting the ORA via email the day before the event.
Speed limits on base are strictly enforced, easiest way to get to most ranges is through the Lisle gate.
Some group require you to do butt duty(pull and mark targets) some groups use electronic targets, some groups use paid markers. Bring some cash $20-$25 if paid marker are used or for the cost recovery of the electronic targets.
You can get lunch on base at the Canex, there is a pizza joint, Timmies and a Subway.
Bring a rifle suitable for the event, ie. your .30-30/SKS would be great for a plinking event/sporting rifle event, not so much for a day that will only be shooting 1000 yards.
Also if you are using a muzzle brake, let the match organizer know, so he can squad you with others shooting a muzzle brake.
Hope this helps.

For the Borden guys, how many weekends a year can youshoot if you want to? I’ve always wanted to get in to long range...
