long range shooting

A .223 with a fast twist barrel (1:8") with 80 gr bullets will almost keep up with a .308 shooting 155 gr bullets out to 1000 yards. And at about 1/2 the cost and 1/4 the recoil. Where the .308 pulls away from the .223 is when VLD bullets or heavier (175 gr) pills are used.

I was testing 223 (80 Sierra) and 308 (155 Sierra) 0ne day at 1000 yards. I put up target faces to shoot groups at. I shot a 10 shot group with both calibers on each face. It was easy to which caliber made each hole.

There was a bit of wind that day, so the groups were a bit wider than tall.

On each target, the 223-80 had a bit less wind effect than the 308-155.

That said, at 900 and 1000 i prefer the 308 bcasue there is better chance of the maker finding the hole. At 800 and shorter, the 223 is just fine. It is easy to find a bullet hole in the bull.
