Getting into long range shooting and would like to know what size targets you guys using for 600, 800 and 1,000 yds shooting??? I would like to get steel gongs and will be working my way slowly to get there with my 308 set up and wondering what to set my goals for these distances.
Cheers

Used old farm discs and welded the center section closed. I believe they are 23" disc. Works ok and the price was right, but the odd bullet does go straight through.

I've got all sorts of sizes, with a few more full sized IPSC than anything else. There was no particular reason to prefer those; beyond getting a screaming deal on them. Among my favorites are some 36" X 18"X 1" thick plates that I got for nothing.

As far as I'm concerned there's no such thing as a steel target that's too big at longer range, because I'm not aiming at the gong. I'm aiming at whatever spray painted aiming points are on it. A bigger target will at least tell me where the misses went.

In F-Class the target frame at 1000 yards is about 4 feet by 4 feet, but the bull is like 2.3 inches.

I made four AR 500 plates that are 2 feet square by 1/4 inch thick so I can carry them.

Also 2 target frames that hold one plate above the other

I put both frames side by side to make a 4 foot square back stop.

In front of that I hang a 10 inch steel gong with a 4 inch bull.

The back stop catches the crazies and I pick on the smaller gong.

Thx guys. Sounds like a bigger affordable sized background then a good sized gong for accuracy depending on ranges.
I can work with that.
Any other options would be greatly appreciated.
Thx

I have a full sized IPSC one and an 18.5” square gong. Spotting misses would be easier with a bigger steel backstop but I would hate to carry that around. I think I’m going to carry plywood and just mark the misses when downrange first trip if required.

I would put up two targets at each distance: a 1 MOA and a 2 MOA target. That should be a good start.

This is what I use because it makes sense to me. 1 MOA and 2 MOA. The 2 MOA gets you there, but 1 MOA (at the very least) is the goal at long distance. Or it is for me.

If gong smashing, i would suggest get a big/med/and small size. Size down as you get in the groove! I started with a 18", then 12", now 8". 18" for me was easy peasy at 1000, but the 8" is far more challenging especially in a wind. I shoot against a sand hill, so easy to walk the shots in.

If you can, put up a 4x8 sheet of plywood. Offers lots of target room. Then find old paper spools from the end of newsprint or other cheap large volume paper. The local newspaper used to give roll ends away with a food bank donation. These usually had 20feet of paper 3feet wide on them.. enough to change out back drops many times. Or just cover with new targets. Gongs and steel are nice, but sometimes others in your area like to take them home for their own keeping. Shot up sheets of plywood seem to be left alone.

Check out Insite Arms for steel T21 plates. They come in all sizes and they ship across the country. The cool thing is the plates come with a hanger that allows you to hang the plates from a standard steel fence post (standard steel post sold for about $15/each at hardware and farm stores). I had the opportunity to shoot these targets and they really sing (clang). They seem to hold up really well to high volume target shooting.
I just ordered a bunch for my range and they recommended 3/8” for the closer targets (to 400-500 yds) and the 1/4” plates for further distances.

I've been using black garbage bags in winter,,, white in summer for LR shooting.

Fill with air and watch it deflate when it gets tagged.
I set them at close range distances at 800 to 1700 meters for practic since they are close to Deer size body girth...

Frugal to shoot and a person can flatten out lots of them in the day,,, most are reusable so long as a person brings the ductape. LOL.

Place them in many configurations like stacking,,, spread-out or single format at each shooters choosing.

Normally I use the medium size garbage bags since I get 100 of them for $3.65 a box.

Deflation is a good thing you know. Ha

Good luck on the target acquisition all,,, good times happen to those that go after it.

You just gave me an idea... I think I'll try helium balloons with my 22 this summer for aerial practice out over the lake. (When no boats are around)
