hey folks, i was wanting to test the waters on long range shooting with irons.

is it done at all? i have a 303 p14 with irons that go out to 1200 yards. and i wondered if there is a following. where i could practice this dicipline in bc

Contact your local Provincial Rifle Association. Yes there are competition for iron sights, look under "Target Rifle". You might also want to check out the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association web page at www.dcra.ca or type "Palma shooting" into your search engine.

To see what the interest can be, look up SERVICE Rifle in the USA. Camp Perry is likely the biggest match of its kind.

Other large groups would include Palma, BPCR Silhouette and Olympic style shooting.

With a properly sized target, quality sights and some good eyesight, you can shoot just as well as with a scope. The main disadvantage is seeing conditions before pulling the trigger.

Sounds like a lot of fun...

I have been involved in Palma and Service rifle shooting. A hell of a lot of fun, especially at national and international comp.

The old fassioned open or iron sights really become impressive during these shoots. Many shooters underestimate these type of sights.

I was told about a compititon held at a gun club that was open to ANY kind of rifle/sight combination. It was shot from multiple positions, and at ranges from 25 to 150 metres. As mentioned, it was completely open to any type of firearm, target rifle, scope etc.

The match was won by a person shooting a muzzle loading rifle with peep sights. :D :dancingbanana: It was the first and last time they held that type of match.

DCRA Fullbore Target Rifle is shot with aperature sights. It is a demading discipline shot by the best marksmen in Canada, such as Jim Paton, BC and Alain Marion, QC, plus many other serious competitors. In NS, we have shot provincial matches since 1861 and still compete yealy for the Inter-Maritome Trohy, 1866. Fullbore is not for everybody, requiring dedication that most shooters choose not to make, however the satisfaction equals the effort. Contact your PRA.

Regards,

Peter

Few people know that this type of shooting is the longest-running organized sport in Canada. Sadly, our Cadet movement has gone away from iron-sight shooting and the traditional "nursery" for these shooters has all but disappeared.

If the sport hopes to continue, its shooters will need to think outside the box to attract new participants. When you consider that the equipment is all pretty much equal (give or take) it is very much a contest where the quality of the shooter makes all the difference. It takes years of practice and dedication. TR is very much more than the sum of all its parts and I hope it will carry on for years to come.

It amazes me to see TR guys like Pitcairn, Best, Peron etc scoring as well as guys shooting with scopes and bipods - on ISSF targets that are the same for both F and TR!

Cadets still shoot iron sights. Even though most of their shooting these days are with Daisy air rifles at 10m. They still run a cadet marksman course at Connaught every year with the top 18 cadets selected to shoot on the cadet Bisley team the following year.

Sadly very few of these cadets today continue on with target rifle shooting once they leave the cadet system and have to start paying their own way.

after we got bored with that, he turned the paltform, and took a shot at 1,000 - the shot landed short.
oldbadger adjusted said rifle's OPEN ironsight, and our boy landed the next round smack dab in the center!

maybe next year our new 1,000 meter range will be finished.

That is sooooo cool.

Nice to see you back around, Cat!

Thanks!
been busy with some family issues, and work.
Add to that a week on the river looking for some lost canoers, and things were not the best .
However, getting things clean up, issues settled, and yup, gonna send some more bullets downrnage wid de ol' sling'n'irons!

Hey Cat,
The DCRA is coming up and there might still be room for you to enter. 9 days of sling'n'irons should allow you to get plenty of lead down range:cool:

Unfortunately I'm too far away from Homestead let alone Cannaught!
However, seeing's how the Captain has moved back that way, I may be so inclined next year!:)
