Long term effects of buck and slugs through chokes??

So I'm sitting in my man room, fondling my Benelli M2 Tactical and got to thinking about the chokes.

Right now I have the Mod choke in and figured I'd leave it there as a good all-around choke. I shoot probably 50% bird shot, 25% slugs and 25% buck shot.

What, if any, will be the long term effects of shooting slugs and buck through a choke on the tighter side like the Modified. Will it eventually part ways with the barrel and go down range, or seize in place? Will it have no noticeable effect at all?

Just wondering if I should I rethink my choice for a do all Choke.

shouldnt be anything apart from normal wear and tear..

buck, like bird ( but not like steel bird ) will deform slightly as it goes through the choke.. and most brand slugs are designed to be fired out of anything up to and including a full choke.. so i wouldnt be concerned.

Steel birdshot wont really negatively effect your choke either. It does not deform like steel but will just compress the outer leaves of the wad as it goes through the choke.
That being said, dont overchoke steel.. the mod choke is for steel what the full choke is for lead

Just a few thing to think about

What are you shooting the bird shot at!!!! Targets or birds with wings

I had not shot trap in 5 years and picked up a used Win Pump 12g
shot a 19/25 I then checked the choke and it was a Modified
My best when I was shooting every week was 22 with a O/U trap gun

So a mod is tight and you do not want to shoot steel shot in anything tighter than a mod

If shooting slugs I put on the Smooth IC barrel with sights
Or when I was shooting IPSC shotgun

Some of the SASS guys are shooting guns with no choke

While they pass through the choke safely, I believe that shooting slugs through a choked barrel is not without consequence. If you shoot 50 slugs through a modified choke, chances are it won't be modified anymore. If shooting slugs is what you want to do, that's no problem, but you might be ahead of the curve by selecting an IC choke tube. Whether this theory is true or not will be born out by occasionally patterning your gun to see if anything has changed. If your gun eats a steady diet or buckshot and slugs, you may never notice a difference, but the birdshot patterns may suffer.

You should have no problems whatsoever. My 870 has a 20" rifle sighted barrel that actually shoots better slug groups with the modified choke than with improved cylinder.

Interesting thoughts on the subject. Never though that the mod choke might be opened up a bit over time. Has any one ever done this type of test before?

Modified is my preferred choke for buckshot and slug shooting. I have shot many hundred slugs through both a fix modified choke and modified tube in a Remington 870. The choke specifications and pattern performance have not changed. I do not agree with the statement that if you shoot "50 slugs through a modified choke, chances are it won't be modified anymore."

I'd call this the voice of experience on a matter such as this.
