Is anyone gonna get out for the long weekend and get some hunting in?

What are ya goin for? Campin' it or day trips? Any opener traditions?

I'm not a bow hunter, and my opening days have always been waterfowl in Sepetember. It is the same play by play each yaer. I fall asleep with ducks in my head. I wake up and jump out of bed, Still 230, #### !!!
Crawl back in bed, Fall asleep, .... Wake up, Jump out of bed !!! 315, ####!!!

AT 5 O'clock I'm snaking around the house trying to be quiet. (trying)
My adrenalin is pumpin; and I get real bad shivers, similar to shock. :)
While shaking and shivering I get in a mouthfull of something or other, maybe a muffin, toast or something, and some caffein.

I'll definitely get to the truck and realize I left something in the house.
I begin to drive and am like a zombie. Defog on bust, radio on low, eyes fixed on the horizon, for some reason CRAVING an Export A gold smoke (quit 7 years ago), but have a little cigar going instead, sipping a Tim's coffee by now
(Tim's server looks at me like I need serious help)

Arrive. One final full blast of the heat, and then I'm out. Gun leaned on the truck by the gas cover that I just opened to put the keys in (may need a new spot now) A quick look at the compass or a mark on the Gps, 3 shells out and laid on the hood, Tighten up the belts, comfy the pack, look at the watch, drop the shells in and....

Welcome to Paradise, enjoy your stay. :dancingbanana::dancingbanana::dancingbanana:

Nicely put Sealhunter. Good luck to all the weekend warriors out there. Bear season opens on Tue. in my WMU. Wish me luck.

Sunday a bunch of friends and I will be teaching an all day duck hunting course to couple of dozen new apprentice hunters near Saskatoon, then Monday morning Sept 1st we'll take them hunting. In the afternoon we'll teach them how to clean and cook the game. It's a mentored hunt program sponsored by Delta waterfowl. That's how I start my fall the last couple of years. Fun and rewarding.

Locally Sept 1 2008 is opening for 4 point mule/blacktail deer and any whitetail buck.

Also taking my Mini 14 Target and going to try and call in some coyotes.

Here's the great part I will also be prospecting so will be packing my SRH...

I've been out already up my tree stand. Put up 2 elk entering my stand last night, too bad I don't have a tag for them.....sat till dark last night....didn't see any deer at all, but still had the best ending to a crappy day at work! Hoping to get out tonight and Saturday morn/night as well! No Sunday hunts in my GHA....yet, next year hopefully for sure!

Monday morning I whack ducks. Probably not many as I'm hunting a friend's slough that has hardly any birds in it but the northern opener is purely symbolic for me anyway. The real carnage starts on the 8th when the southern zones open. Got a new boat, new dekes, 200 shells (to start) and my father is coming out for the last 3 weeks of Sept. It's like Christmas.

Sad sad news. The weather wasn't fit and i called in to work the rest of the week. One day this week will be my first morning out, still working on which day. The weather was a real let down.

I know the feeling.

Last year on grouse opener I was up bright and early and got out there and it starting pissing out and never stopped that whole day :(

I thought the weather would have been great for ducks. I've always done better when there were clouds and rain, sleet etc.

You know what, very little stops me from getting out as far as weather goes, but...
Wife and little one are in Northern Alberta visiting the family and took my dig camera with them. (####) Which meant no decent pics of the morning out which I like to have for my album ( and to rub in Dad's face)

I went to bed to very strong winds and rain and awoke at 5 am to see the same.
It would have been the ####s of a day with so much wind and so much rain.
The wind even more so then the rain.

I am going out for an evening shoot tomorrow, maybe.

I still might hold off to make my first hunt of the season the way I like it, ...
Cold early morning.

I'll be putting a good report and pics very soon

Bah! My best day jump shooting ducks back East was during the residue of a hurricane.

I've had a lot of days when the wind was ripping and the rain smacking against the window as I got up to go hunting. It was very tempting to stay in bed. Never regretted forcing myself up and out the door to hunt though.

I do it too, but it has to be right. I don't have a retriever and shoot over water mostly. Wind is a big factor for me. Far more so than rain or snow.

It's also funny the way you get brought up and how it makes you how you are. Back home, I sal####er duck hunted a lot from the rocks and cliffs. At age 9 I'd be begging to go out in Late January on the rocks. I'll always remember dad saying. "no good today, the winds off"
If the wind was off the birds were off, or would float off when shot. When the wind was in, Perfect!
To this day, just about everything is the wind for me. Trout are on the Souwesters, Geese are on the Noreasters, Storms are on the Easterlies.

You'll be pleased to not however, that it looks like armageddon out now, and I'm about to pull on my gear.

Will post update when I get back tonight.
