I posted this on a different forum but i thought more people here might know the answer;

I got another rifle today for rebuild. its a 1945 LB wit ha assume a 44 barrel. I just have some questions on the barrel markings. what is on top of the 44? and what are the two ovals with looks like a 71 and 77 in them? also why is there no serial No. on the barrel?

The stamp next to the 77 and 71 is the Canadian "C broad arrow".

You also can see the "L" and "B" superimposed, that's for Longbranch.

No idea what the 71 and 77 ar for.

On No4's the barrel isn't seralized.

Good find!

Lou

Here is a Longbranch Barrel marking you don't see often...

The oval is an inspector mark with the number being the inspectors personal ID number.
The mark by the 44 is a proof mark.
