I'm new to the shotgun world and I am considering trying trap shooting. I know the purists out there will scoff at me shooting trap with a "black" 590 with a 20 inch barrel. But hey, I just want to try it out and have some fun. After all, isn't that what this hobby is about?

I have seen other 590's at the range with different length barrels. And some with what looks like holes on the top near the muzzle. I've even seen barrels for the 590A1 at my lgs. My question is, should I consider a longer barrel. And if so, how long? And why?

Sorry....newbie shotgunner ;-)

You need to order this part from Brownells.

You can unscrew and swap out your magazine tube with this one.
Then you can use any Mossberg 500 hunting barrel on your 590 receiver.

28" screw-in-choke barrels are easy to come by.
Great if you want to shoot trap or go duck hunting.

So, I need to change out the magazine to change barrels?

Yes. You will find it difficult (impossible) to find any other barrels that will fit with your 590 8+1 magazine tube.

But it's an easy job to unscrew the magtube, and swap it with a Mossberg 500 5+1 tube.

Then you will find many barrels available to use with your 590 receiver. (waterfowl, turkey, sabot, etc.)

I found it not only not easy to unscrew the magazine tube on my 590 but impossible to do so.

Any advice out there on how to defeat the red locktite without using a blowtorch?

Are you sure the barrels at your LGR were for the 590A1?
Your best bet is to have fun with your gun as is and pick up a different gun if you want to get into trap seriously.

Yes, the barrels I saw were for the A1. And yes, I just want to try it out. Everyone at my club seems very enthusiastic and they say I should try it with the 590. I think I will try it and see if I like it and go from there.
