I did some "long range" plinking with an old Cooey 60 last week. I got bored ringing a 6" gong at 200 meters so I tried it at 300 meters. I found that to be quite a challenge as the wind varied from 0 to 4 mph and was changing direction from one shot to the next. I ran out of elevation adjustment 30 MOA up from 100yd zero so I held over another 6 MOA to get on target.

Does anyone have experience shooting a 22lr beyond 300 meters? If so, please share your experiences with us.:sniper:

At our hunting camp we installed a gong across the bay. It is 360 yards away. We shoot at it with centre fire rifles, and last year we decided to try it with the Ruger 10-22. We had to aim at a tree branch way up high over the gong. The procedure was to walk it by shooting about 10 feet over the gong and the shot was short so we did hit the water so we raised it until we could hit just at the edge of the lake than we raised it about a foot more over the gong in order to hit it. The problem is that the impact did not even move the gong, so we had to set-up a large paper target over the gong area in order to see if we could hit it. And behold we could hit it every now and than by aiming at that branch just over the gong. That must have been at least 20 feet over the gong..

Longest I have shoot with a .22 is 185 meters (had to measure to make sure I was not dreaming) using a 10/22. Got the gopher in what is to this day the luckiest "hole in one" shot for me, got him straight down the throat as he lifted his head ... :sniper:

Longest for me is the turkey silhoutte at the CF range (385m) from my Anschutz. I could actually fire the shot, glance over to my spotting scope and spot the impact. Pretty cool. I should mention that my "spotting scope" is actually an astronomical telescope and I was running about 150 power to curb the BS comments.

I've pushed my CZ452 to 200 on paper and about 150+/- on a gopher. It took 2 shots.First was close, second was boom headshot. Not too interested in long range 22lr. Its not practical after 100 yards. It seems more hampered by bullet quality than shooter skill. Basically you can be good enough to do it, but it is still luck when you make contact.

True statement...why plink away at some way out of range target you actually want to kill with a 22 rimfire if you have the proper equipment to do it right. In my case I was out plinking and a couple crows landed on the far side of the small field I was shooting in. Had no other rifle soooo... just winged it and "kerplunk" down the crow went. Had to walk over and conferm the kill.

My personal best is a confirmed Kill gopher at 215 meters...... I had been trying long shots all day (the gophers are getting wise) so I knew right where to hold my cross hairs for the shot, and down he went. My buddy stayed where I shot while I walked over...... Range finders are great!

Best part was I did it with my customized 10/22 from kneeling.

I was doing some "cruising" on the web and I found a link (I think here on CGN some place) there is a guy who has been testing .22lr for penetration @ 300+ yrds. Appearently a .22 will go right through a thawed turkey at 300 yrds. I would have to say if you hit a gopher at that range it would do him in.

Cheers!

man, my longest shot is 50 meters.

my savage mkII G is so awefull, yes I've always shot it on very windy condition and I'm not the sharpest shooterm, yes I've used bulk remmy thunderbolts.
But 1,5'' group at 50'', it's not very good. After just over a year of shooting this rifle, the stock has come loose and it's easy to move the action back and forth in the stock.

I don't wanna spend any cash on repairing this

Charles:

I also have a MKII, mine is awsome, the complete oposite of yours! I shoot 1 hole groups at 50yrds with American eagle 38gr, and Federal bulk is under 3/4"..... I am sorry yours sucks! I have noticed that my stock will "loosen" after a day at the range, I tighten up the screws and its bang on again..... (could this be your problem I wonder) The only reason I don't take my MKII out for gophers is that it is a little on the heavy side...... my 10/22 is lighter (even with a heavy barrel) and easier to carry when I am walking in the pastures hunting gophers.

FoxyT:

It's funny ya know I stopped shooting my .17 this year, I'm trying to go "old school" and I can't seem to find any .17 with any kind of regularity (same manuf. & weight/nose), also I find with the amount of Gophers I shoot I need to wear ear prot. with my .17 and not so much with the .22. Besides, I seem to be able to hit the gophers I see with my .22, don't get me wrong I hit them with my .17 as well........ but the cost is cheaper...... If the gopher is out past 200yrds..... I am not going to realise he is there to shoot at!

Cheers!

i think the 10/22 with a bull barrel is definitely heavier, but balances better probably!

I'll check with the screws on the mkII later

Guy at Bisley rented a 1000 yard target and a girl to mark it. kept calling for her to check for a hit.

A range officer came by to see what he was doing.

"Sir. That 22 isn't really suitable for 1000 yards. Why don't you go over to the gallery range (100 yards).

"Sure it is! Look here.... Danger to 1 mile."

Longest shot I ever made with a .22 lr was just a hair under 300 yards
I was on a hill in the pasture and the squeaks seemed to be getting smart so I looked across the coulee to the rock pile across the way to see if there was any action over there.
A Magpie had landed right in the middle of the other gopher town, and had no idea I was there. That or he thought he was out of range.
I held so that he was right at the bottom of the scope, and dead center of the cross hair and squeezed one off.

I was probably as surprised as he was when he fell over!
I tried a few gophers from there, but the elevation is so hard to manage at that range.

I think if you were using really consistent ammo, like the Eley match stuff and so on, 200 yard gophers would be a very repeatable thing.
