Gentlemen,

It's a well known fact among my friends that I collect hollow-point ammo for handguns. Don't know why, but I love it.

I have been doing this for the last couple of years and have found some pretty cool stuff, most of it in guns shops in AB. Allot of it is just a box or two that shops have bought from either estate sales, auctions...whatever. Some of my most prized bullets have been found when shops go in and reorganize their ammo and find a box of something old and put it up for sale.

I think what started my current obsession is after a ton of research and reading, most of it done on the internet, I was reading about the "Winchester Black Talon" rounds that had a "Lubox" coating on the bullet, making it black. Their was a huge movement in the early 90's, before I was even able to buy guns or ammo, to ban this ammo because anti's figured that the "Lubox" was some type of Teflon coating that enabled the black talon rounds to penetrate Level 1 and 2 body armour. After immense public pressure, Winchester discontinued the "Black Talon" name and the "Lubox" coating.

They still make the SXT bullet, which is essentally the Black Talon bullet sans coating and I have found these quite readily available at most gun shops. I have not seen any original Black Talon ammo, that was, until today.

Needles to say, they are not the original Black Talon's, but it's close enough!!!!

Hollow point ammo for handguns is prohibited. However, handgun ammo that can be fired out of a rifle is allowed to be hollow point. So, basically it's one of your typical retarded Canadian firearms laws...

Hollow point ammo is NOT illegal in handguns, it was many years ago due to a stupid ruling under the Explosives Act, but even the dummies in government finally figured out that hollow point bullets don't really explode and are therefore not prohibited.

I shot some of those into wet newspaper and got a perfectly expanded Black Talon. Very cool and pretty nasty to be on the receiving end.

Perfect! I was looking for a way to "mushroom" some of the 147Gr Golden Sabers that I have to keep/give away to friends who like that kinda ####.

How many layers? What distance?

Newspaper is not always reliable, try 4L milk jugs, line 4 up. You will get perfect expansion with the bonded bullets.

Hollow points have never been illegal in Canada, even out of handguns, Its an old wives tale perpetuated through ignorance, ignorance as in not knowing, not from being stupid. We have the excerpt posted on our range quoting the law, can't remember the which government document though. Probably reposted through the NFA etc.

You were unable to import them for a lengthy time, not sure about possession.

I too collect HP for handgun's, have about 50 different varieties in three calibers, including all generations of Winchester Black Talon to the current Ranger series. My opinion, the older Black Talon rounds produce horrible results in all the tests I have performed. Always over penetrating and under expanding in any media. The current crop of 147gr. JHP is much better, way better wound ballistics.

Good find on the old school 50rd. box of LEO Black Talons. Should be able to sell the 50rd box for about $200 on the exchange forum considering all those trying to pawn off the 20rd boxes for $80!

Gushulak: I'd love to see pictures of whatever you have!

I have about 15 varieties of different calibers. Lots of money spent on ammo I'll never shoot!

Actually I used a 20L pail full of phonebooks. Jam as many phonebooks into the pail as you can then fill the pail with water and leave it overnight. Make sure to top it off as the paper soaks up the water. Warm water gets absorbed faster. Then just shoot into the bucket. I suggest you shoot a few rounds into different spots as you don't always get perfectly expanded bullets.

FWIW Golden Sabres are incredibly consistent. We shot about 5 or 6 at different times and they all expanded exactly the same.

Their IMPORT was being (improperly??) controlled by NRC under the "explosives act".

That was fixed @10 years ago IIRC.

Once they were here they were totally un-controlled.
