Not entirely sure where to post this, if it belongs in milsurp please let me know.

A friend of mine dug this up recently, and we're wondering what it is and if it is worth anything. All I can figure out is that it is pre-1911.

looks to be a Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammer. And yeah, it is definitely worth something. How much, I will leave to the Colt experts. Nice find though!

colt 1905...what a find!!

Colt Model 1905 Military

Yes, the venerable Colt Model 1905 in .45ACP. The first .45ACP pistol.

Rare? Yes!

Valuable? Yes!

Value? Sky's the limit to a collector!

Interesting, I posted this the other day.... My "new to me" 1909 mfg Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammer .38ACP.... You can see where the Model 1905 got it's start...

If it wasn't for the Colt 1900 & 1902 [sporting & military models] and 1903 [pocket hammer model] in .38 "Rimless Smokeless" [aka .38 ACP], there may have never been a Colt Model 1905 [the first .45ACP] which later spawned the venerable Colt 1911.

As seen with my 1914 mfg Colt Government model [top] and 1920 mfg Colt M1908 Pocket Hammerless .380 ACP:

The 1903 on it's own [you can still see hints of the Colt "fire blue"]:

You can definitely see the evolution from the M1903 Pocket Hammer .38ACP scaled up to become the Model 1905 .45ACP.

I will interrogate my friend further about how he got it. He did say that he bought it off of some one that had inherited the hand gun. He also mentioned that the original owner had a military background. While doing some googling I discovered that it was one of the last run (around 1911?) and that their was only 800 manufactured in 1911.

I will post any further updates.....Im still trying to find a dollar value.

Now the bad question, you say a find, so was it registered, if not, oh well

Its not a prohib so he should be able to get it registered as long as he has an RPAL. He could contact Gary Brietkrietz's constituency office for help with the process if he is uneasy.
