was digging around in the ammo closet and found this!

Yep, 1950's stock. The Savage .303 was a popular rifle cartridge back then {not sure why...}. I have my Granddad's savage in .303 and a bunch of old cartridges too. Hornady still makes a run of very fine Savage .303, they are expensive as he11 but really accurate. More so than the older stuff.

I don't think you can beat the old dominion round nose soft point bullet though I really wish they made it still ive found the lead to be nice and soft and the jacket looks to be made from copper

I think I can tell you why the .303 Savage was popular. The round is pretty much a ballistic twin of the .30/30 Winchester but that 190 grain roundnose bullet made it much more efective on heavy game. The old .303 Savage had a great reputation as a moose rifle in my neck of the woods. The long, heavy for calibre bullet would wade more meat than the .30/30.

joking about what? when it comes to a damn moose, i know guys that have hunted them, and theyve told me yeah the 30-30 can get the job done, but i think id take my 7mm ive seen the destruction power of that thing, thats why i dont use it for deer anymore

man i dont know if id ben shooting moose with a 30-30, i know guys do it all the time, but i think id take my 7mm :) id feel a bit safer

I shot my first moose with .30-30 imperial 170gr.

The one bullet broke a rib on the close side and broke the far side rib and stopped just under the skin.

The second bullet missed the close rib and broke the far rib and exited the animal.

Range about 50 yards, my first moose :) and my last hunt with grandpa :-(

Funny story, I was just having a conversation with a guy at work about hunting. He's been wanting to take a moose so he was preparing for that day. He was saying that he bought a new .270 short mag to replace his under powered 30-06!!

I said "you know lots of guys have shot moose with 30-30's for generations". He looked at me as if I was crazy and then walked away!!

It's all about marketing today with hunters, you need a 300 win mag to hunt coyotes after all!

300 win mag: that must be one a' them britch-loadin raffles, huh?

And here I am, rebuilding an 1857 Tower musket..... and I thought I was getting all modern!

Seriously, OP, that is likely about a $75 box of ammo.

There was NOTHING wrong with that old Dominion brass.

Did you let him know that the 30-06 actually has more effective killing power than the .270 wizzbang? Because it does ;)

oh i know a 30-30 will kill them, i just like my 7mm cannon :) ive heard horror stories on moose if you just piss them off and bad things can happen, i know the 30-30 hits hard,

And smellie, REALLY??? 75 bucks?? one of my customers just gave it to me, maybe ill just hang on to it and add it to my ammo collection,

Somebody will have to tell my wife's nephew that you can't shoot moose with a 30-30. I guess a 30-06 isn't much good either. What is an old fart like me going to use anyway? I've only been moose hunting once, many years ago. I didn't know any better and took a .303 British and an 8mm Mauser. Lucky I didn't see any moose.... :p

yep and you need a .375 H&H for deer and a .458 lott for moose lol ive heard the story's of natives using .22lr for moose taking the knees out then putting it down the a shot in the ear I find that crazy. I will say a rifle should be sighted for about 50 yards because if your calling them in thick brush 50 and under is where they are going to be
