LOOKING AMMO 30-06 For Garand

When you find the secret warehouse of USGI surplus ammo, please tell us.

In the meantime, there is (or was) US commercial hardball yellow box and white box ammo that will function your rifle.

aren't we all ;)

....as for the "new Federal ammo" for the M1 .... who can afford that stuff ?!

It's always nice to have a few hundred rounds of new commercial on hand even if you reload. I've been looking for some for my Garand as well but keep hearing about it after their all sold out. I wonder if Lebaron's or Sail might have some. Wouldn't mine some M1A ammo as well.

Try BudgetShooterSupply.ca ?

WOLF AMMO 30-06 SPR 145gr FMJ MIL-CLASSIC 20/b

$16.00

Straight out of Russia and ready to rock your gun's world! Military-style production, with polymered steel case and 145-grain FMJ bullet. Non-corrosive, Berdan-primed, non-reloadable. Muzzle Velocity: 2,781 F.P.S. Muzzle Energy: 2,490 ft.-lbs.

I have heard references to this. I assume the Garand is picky about the pressure curve, but what exactly is the issue with the Grand being finicky about 30.06 ammo?

Nice. I will definitely have to pick some of that up when he comes back

I am leed to believe the only issue with the M1 Garand and Modern loads is the excess force developed, can bend the Op rod as well as create cracks in the reciever heel.

A common option to make the M1 a litte more ammo friendly, is to use a Schuster adjustable gas nut. They are about $45 USD.

Even with the gas nut some very high pressure rounds should still be avoided.

Not picky, it will usually fire it all just fine. The 2 big issues are premature clip ejection from excessive bolt battering, and bending the oprod. The reason is the slower powders used in modern ammo to reduce chamber pressure and increase muzzle velocity. IMR 4895 is the powder originally developed for the .30-06 cartridge and it has the proper pressure curve that the M1 was designed to run at. Slower powders produce higher pressure at the gas port which leads to excessive drive pressure on the gas system. This causes the issues above. Both Shuster and Mccann gas plugs vent excessive pressure from the gas cylinder to allow modern ammunition to be used without being too hard on the rifle.
