I've pretty much decided to get a Marlin 795 as my first firearm.

I like the low price and out of box accuracy, as I'm still new to guns in general and am not 100% sure how much I will get into things.

Where is the best place to purchase?
I've been looking around and have seen the price from $179 (Cabelas) to $250 (can't remember)

I'm also thinking about the ProMag 25 round mags. How many places in Canada sell them? Who has the best pricing?

Thanks!

PS - I'm still waiting on my PAL application, so I'm not in a super rush - does anyplace put them on sale regularly?

Usually the regular 795 comes on sale around Xmas, boxing day at several suppliers. I have purchased 2 of the stainless steel versions (at different times) from Reliable Gun in Vancouver, a sponsor on this site. Great price (and they will price match), very reasonable shipping to ON here and just good people to deal with.

As far as the Pro mags, I just bought another one 2 days ago. They seem to all sell for around $39.95. A distributor for them on this site, Hi Calibre Services, puts them on sale. You may want to watch their posts.

I installed a DIProducts trigger and guard on mine as well as a set of Tech sites. Not long ago, someone had a used Tech site for sale in the rimfire parts exchange. I don't recall seeing it as being sold. Nice peep sights for the Marlin.

I think you will like the 795 very much. Accurate and no problems even without any mods.\

Good choice. After going through about 6 1022 Rugers over the years, the 795 is a breath of fresh air for 1/2 the price. Way more accurate too. Bought mine at BassPro near Calgary. Hard to find Stainless ones so bought a blue one. If I can find a stainless one, I'll sell the model 60 and have 2 795s. 60s are great also but the tube feed is a pain for gophers.

Great choice. I've had a blued 795 for several years, and bought a stainless 795 less than a year ago. I'm a big proponent of Marlin 795s~superb guns for the money, and more accurate than the new 10/22 I owned for a short time. (at 2-1/2x the price) But, being an honest fellow..I don't mind also saying that the iron sights that came on both of my guns were quite poor~even though I asked to see several guns at my dealer and chose the "best" one of the lot. Namely, the rear sight. But..with my aging eyes..my plans were to scope these guns when I bought them, so it didn't dissuade me from buying either one.

IF Marlin ever decided to make a special edition 795 with higher quality iron sights that were actually straight...I'd probably buy a third 795. If that rifle had a walnut stock, I'd DEFINITELY buy one. :)

I've talked myself into/out-of Tech Sights numerous times...

After one trip to the range, my 795 turned my 10/22 into a safe queen. Just way more accurate.

Bass Pro, Wholesale Sports, and Cabelas all put them on sale, from time to time. Cabelas has them in stock online right now for $179 - which is a plenty fair price.

How do you find the DIP ? The one thing I want to do with mine is a trigger job. Does it take out the creep, and what's the pull weight when done?

I agree with 22LRGUY on the factory 795 sights. Not great.
I got some tech sights and the 795 is so much better now. I would buy the Tech Sights again.

Keep checking different websites because they go on sale quite often. I paid $129 for mine but that was a few years ago. If you find one on sale I'm pretty sure you can go in and buy it and they will hold it for you until your pal arrives.

IKR... I called up DIP about a trigger and trigger guard and they were like... 'We don't deliver to Canada anymore because we got burned by a local retailer' and 'for the amount we sell to Canada, we can't be bother with the paperwork'. I was like...'really!?!' They didn't tell me which store burnt them.

Anyways... To the OP, good choice. Marlins give Anschutz and CZ a run for their money in terms of accuracy at a very affordable price. Best bang for the buck. FYI, most of the 795 parts are interchangeable with the model 60 and it could also use the accutrigger and magazines from the XT. Little know fact, best trigger going is off of a Marlin M2000. I was so impressed with the trigger on my son's M2000 that I ordered one from Numrich along with a few 10 round magazines.

Wholesale sports if your near one has the best price on them, boxing day picked one up for $125 taxes in.
By far cheapest and most accurate gun purchase to date, now if it came with a decent trigger out of the box.
Stayed away from the promags but loaded up on the nickel 10 tounders.

Couldn't even find the 795 on the Wholesale Sports website. I know it was there (but sold out) a few weeks back.

...meant to add... I would steer clear of any high capacity magazine until you've had some time with the gun and the Marlin-made (100% reliable) 10 round magazines. I personally don't get the fascination with high capacity magazines, but then I prefer quality over quantity when I shoot. You can't lay prone with a giant mag hanging out the bottom, sling carrying with one installed sucks, they're bulky, plastic, etc. To each his own.

I used to be kinda with you on that, but starting to change my mind a bit.

The farm I've been working over to get rid of the gophers... It's high volume shooting. I can empty 3 of the 25 round mags, twice, in an afternoon, without any above normal missing - not doing rapid fire, just shot, after shot, after shot. Dropped over 100 from a single spot in about an hour and a half.

When you're doing that kind of shooting, reloading or even just swapping mags cuts into your total for the day.

Appreciate the thoughts.

My reasoning is:

1) A single 25 round mag costs less than 2.5 of the 10 round ones

2) I don't plan on emptying the mag just to empty the mag. Accuracy is my goal, not speed.

3) Once i'm in shooting position, I'd rather not have to keep stopping to refill the mags

Though, the lack of being able to be in the prone position is a good point.

The ProMag 25 round banana mags run (virtually) flawlessly in both my Papoose and 795. The only problem is the last shot bolt hold open doesn't engage when using them.

I also keep a handfull of the factory 7 and 10 round mags, which are also handy for prone shooting.

You'll get people who are dead set against high-cap mags, and people who think they're the only way to go. The truth is in the middle. Both the factory mags and the high cap mags have their place.

Kinneys Shooting Supply for DIP products shipped to Canada, they do make good stuff

I have a couple older marlin 60's, nice guns, and want a papoose next
