Depends what you're after, but if you're wanting something with a more updated touch, I'd pick up a BCM complete upper with a KMR rail already attached.

I like both looks. As long as I have the ability to switch out the handguard shoudl I choose to, I'm not really married to either. Ultimately I want something that's going to run reliably.

There are constant shortages so you basically have to jump on whatever bandwagon comes by while you can.
US versus Canadian dollar doesn't help either for selection.
But I think in 2016 we have to accept for an AR build Chrome lined barrel should be the standard for an AR and M4 feed ramps for whatever you do buy.

Right around $1k will get me a Colt upper from IRG. For a couple hundred less I can get a Spike's upper (which I find very tempting)

Get the colt bro. Dont wait or hesitate. Buy that as your standard first. Then anything better you get down the line like a KAC of whatever you have sonething to go by as your gold standard.

You can also get smith and Wesson M&P sport II for less than $999.
The Smith and Wesson is a little bit better as it has dust cover and forward assist. The Colt expense do not have those 2 features
